Ledecky and Biles make history
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, August 1st.
OLYMPICS
In a dramatic meet that came down to the wire, Simone Biles captured the gold medal in all-around gymnastics. Once again, Biles displayed why she is on of the greatest Olympians of all-time, executing extremely difficult skills under pressure. American Suni Lee took home the bronze medal, too. There are so many stats and stories and historical records that Biles and Lee set yesterday– no matter how you tell the story, it was a fantastic result for two athletes who overcame tough obstacles to make it to Paris.
Team USA:
Team USA started the day strong, winning gold in men’s four rowing. The medal ended a 64-year drought! America also took home the gold in the women’s team foil fencing competition.
Two big moments in the pool. First, Kate Douglass added another gold to the US tally in the 200 meter breaststroke. It’s Douglass’ first gold medal, and well-earned after a close race. A few races later, Katie Ledecky became the most decorated female Olympian in US history. Ledecky’s 13th medal was silver, as the US placed second in the 4×200 meter freestyle.
American men’s doubles teams are getting very good at ending legendary careers. This time, Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul defeated Andy Murray and his partner Dan Evans. Fritz and Paul are into the semifinals tomorrow– they could play their countrymen Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram for a gold medal.
After a lengthy rain delay, Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss came back to win their beach volleyball match against China. At just 5’6”, Nuss is attempting to become one of the shortest beach volleyball medalists in Olympic history.
Around the world:
Two swimmers at the Paris games have more than one individual gold medal: hometown hero Leon Marchand, and Canadian Summer McIntosh. McIntosh won her second gold in a dominant 200 meter butterfly race.
Four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek was a big favorite to win a gold medal in Paris. However, Swiatek was upset by Zheng Qinwen in the semifinals. It’s the first time Swiatek has lost at Roland Garros in over three years.
Olympic golf has begun, and the players seem to be in good spirits. I’d give you the round one leaderboard, but round two will be almost over by the time you read this. Time zones!
MLB
There were only five baseball games on the schedule last night, so we get to recap all of them:
The Chicago Cubs pulled off an astonishing walk-off win, beating their rivals the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4. Chicago is still five games under .500 and way out of the playoff race, though. Unbiased opinion, I just believe it is important to remember that information.
We should talk more about how good Bobby Witt Jr. is at baseball. The Royals shortstop hit his 20th home run of the year, and Kansas City beat the Tigers 7-1.
The Atlanta Braves beat the Marlins 4-2. The good team beat the bad team– it really wasn’t that exciting.
In a matchup of two AL division leaders, Cleveland smacked the Baltimore Orioles 10-3. Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez continues to be one of the most under appreciated talents in baseball– he hit another home run last night.
Finally, the Rockies played the Angels. Even though the game went to extra-innings, we’re going to skip the score for more important off-field news…
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Angels superstar Mike Trout is out for the year… again. Trout suffered a setback in his rehab from a meniscus injury, keeping the generational talent out of action for yet another season. Just a bummer for everyone who likes baseball.
2017 all-star Gordon Hayward announced his retirement from the NBA. A 14-year veteran, Hayward was a star for the Utah Jazz, before a gruesome injury on the Boston Celtics hampered the back half of his career. Hayward also led one of the greatest March Madness cinderella teams of recent memory, when his Butler Bulldogs fell just short of upsetting Duke in the NCAA finals.
Football season has barely begun, and the injuries are already rolling in. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has been diagnosed with plantar fascia and will be in a boot for two weeks– the team believes he’ll be back for the regular season. However, Titans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins has a knee injury that has put his availability for the season opener in jeopardy.

TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
MLB: Royals @ Tigers, 6:40 PM on Apple TV
Two of the brightest young lefties in the game go head-to-head in this central division matchup. Cole Ragans is on the mound for Kansas City, and Tarik Skubal starts for Detroit.
OLYMPICS: The best part of the Olympics are when you connect to an athlete or a new sport that you never knew about before turning on the TV. I encourage everyone to surf Peacock or the NBC channels to find something new. There are, however, two very notable athletes/teams on today’s schedule:
Leon Marchand (France): 200 meter individual medley; swimming begins at 2:30 PM
Team USA vs Morocco: soccer quarterfinals, 9 AM
And as always, here is the entire Team USA schedule:
Follow the action!

THIS WEEKEND’S BIG GAMES
MLB: Orioles @ Guardians, 7:15 PM on Saturday; Diamondbacks vs Pirates, 1:35 PM on Sunday
A matchup between two of the top teams in the American League, followed by Paul Skenes day to end the weekend. If there’s one thing about baseball, you know it delivers the hits!
OLYMPICS: By my (very unofficial) count, there will be 51 gold medals won in competitions on Saturday and Sunday. 51! Not to mention that today marks the start of track and field.
All together, there are simply too many sports to fit them all into this space– here are three finals that I’m looking forward to watching:
Doubles tennis: Men not before 9 AM on Saturday, Women not before 9 AM on Sunday
For the men, a possible gold medal matchup between two American teams!
Singles table tennis: Women at 8:30 AM on Saturday, Men at 8:30 AM on Sunday
100 meter dash: Women at 2:50 PM on Saturday, Men at 2:50 PM Sunday
How fast do you think you could you run 100 meters?
Remember– you can check out the Olympics app for a complete schedule of all events… and get ready for a lengthy recap on Monday morning!
The final word goes to Andy Murray, who has now officially retired from professional tennis. Hey Andy, you’re a three-time Grand Slam champion, two-time gold medalist, and knight of the British empire– is there anything you’d like to say?
Never even liked tennis anyway.
