Kershaw reaches 3,000

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, July 2nd.

MLB

With multiple double-headers on the schedule, a total of 19 Major League Baseball games were played yesterday… that’s a lot. Apologies to the Blue Jays beating the Yankees and tying New York for first in the division, Riley Greene and his two-home run day for Detroit, and 16 other highlights from well-played ballgames, but there’s just one that we’re going to discuss this morning:

TENNIS

Another exciting day of action in England, but we’re not going to go over that. Instead, take a look at this ridiculous winner from Corentin Moutet:

SOCCER

America is into the finals of the Gold Cup, thanks to a heroic performance by Diego Luna. The unheralded forward scored two goals and led Team USA to a 2-1 victory over Guatemala. Next up for the US? A highly anticipated rivalry showdown against Mexico in the finals.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

The Knicks have found their man. After a search that went much longer than most expected, New York is set to hire Mike Brown as their new head coach. An experienced coach with time spent on multiple winning teams around the league, Brown was last employed as the head coach of the Sacramento Kings.

Deandre Ayton has agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Lakers. The supremely talented center has faced questions about his commitment and winning attitude, but on paper is a really good fit next to new Lakers star Luka Doncic. We’ll see how Ayton fits in this season.

The St. Louis Blues made a splash in free agency, signing Pius Suter to a two-year contract. I don’t know much about him, but I’ve read good things and look forward to rooting for him! Sometimes the bias comes through when I’m writing, what can I say…

Major League Baseball announced the winners of this year’s All-Star game starting lineup vote. For the first time that I can remember, I think the fans did a solid job. I’ll release another round of predictions for the reserves next week, but here’s a look at who will take the field to begin the night in Atlanta:

TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)

WNBA: Aces @ Fever, 7 PM on Amazon Prime

WIMBLEDON: It continues! Watch a tennis match this morning, could be fun

TRIVIA ANSWERS: Bob Gibson (Cardinals) and Walter Johnson (Senators) are the other two who reached 3,000 with one team. Randy Johnson, Steve Carlton, and CC Sabathia are the other three left-handed pitchers.

“I think that for me, obviously, Sandy [Koufax] is Sandy, [Don] Drysdale -- I haven't [looked at] their numbers. But you're talking about 18 years, though, and the career, the body of work, it's hard not to say Clayton is the greatest Dodger of all time," –Dodger manager Dave Roberts, when asked to pick the greatest pitcher in franchise history
