Kershaw reaches 3,000
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, July 2nd.
MLB
With multiple double-headers on the schedule, a total of 19 Major League Baseball games were played yesterday… that’s a lot. Apologies to the Blue Jays beating the Yankees and tying New York for first in the division, Riley Greene and his two-home run day for Detroit, and 16 other highlights from well-played ballgames, but there’s just one that we’re going to discuss this morning:
Dodgers starter and future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw became the 20th pitcher in baseball history to record 3,000 career strikeouts. The moment came on the final out of the sixth inning against White Sox infielder Vinny Capra- I’ll link the video below. Kershaw joins Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer as the only active players with 3k Ks.
Time for some trivia! Question One: Kershaw has pitched his entire career for one team. Can you name the other two pitchers with 3,000 strikeouts, all for the same franchise? Question Two: Kershaw is one of four lefties to join the 3,000 Ks club. Can you name the other three? Answers at the end!
It’s a rare achievement in the sport made even more special because Kershaw may be the last to ever reach this plateau. Only two pitchers– Chris Sale and Gerrit Cole– are currently within 750 strikeouts of 3,000. Starters don’t throw as many innings or have as long of careers as they used to. You never know what’s possible, but this may have been the last time we see a true ace with the peak and longevity of a career like Clayton Kershaw. It’s easy to take them for granted, but today is a moment to honor one of the all-time greats.
And the cherry on top of the evening was a Freddie Freeman walk-off single to secure a victory. A beautiful celebration of baseball in Los Angeles!
TENNIS
Another exciting day of action in England, but we’re not going to go over that. Instead, take a look at this ridiculous winner from Corentin Moutet:
SOCCER
America is into the finals of the Gold Cup, thanks to a heroic performance by Diego Luna. The unheralded forward scored two goals and led Team USA to a 2-1 victory over Guatemala. Next up for the US? A highly anticipated rivalry showdown against Mexico in the finals.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
The Knicks have found their man. After a search that went much longer than most expected, New York is set to hire Mike Brown as their new head coach. An experienced coach with time spent on multiple winning teams around the league, Brown was last employed as the head coach of the Sacramento Kings.
Deandre Ayton has agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Lakers. The supremely talented center has faced questions about his commitment and winning attitude, but on paper is a really good fit next to new Lakers star Luka Doncic. We’ll see how Ayton fits in this season.
The St. Louis Blues made a splash in free agency, signing Pius Suter to a two-year contract. I don’t know much about him, but I’ve read good things and look forward to rooting for him! Sometimes the bias comes through when I’m writing, what can I say…
Major League Baseball announced the winners of this year’s All-Star game starting lineup vote. For the first time that I can remember, I think the fans did a solid job. I’ll release another round of predictions for the reserves next week, but here’s a look at who will take the field to begin the night in Atlanta:

TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
