Disappointing result for Team USA
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, June 27.
SOCCER
The eyes of the country were on Atlanta last night, and the result was less than ideal– here’s a breakdown of Panama’s 2-1 defeat over the US:
An out-of-character red card for Tim Weah in the 18th minute completely shifted the balance of the game for Team USA. Instead of playing on the front foot, the US were forced to chase the ball and defend.
Falorin Balogun scored a stunner to give the 10-men American side a lead. Seriously, this goal was incredible. Unfortunately, Panama answered back quickly with a goal of their own.
Panama wore the US down by controlling possession and playing physical. Still, the US had an amazing chance to take the lead late in the game. A few moments after the missed chance, Panama scored the winning goal.
You have to wonder if a healthy Matt Turner may have changed the outcome of this one. The US goalie was injured and substituted at half-time.
It’s a hugely disappointing defeat for the Americans, who likely need a win against Uruguay on Monday night to stay alive in the Copa America. One of the best teams in the world, Uruguay beat Bolivia 5-0 last night, and are playing flawless football.
MLB
Aaron Judge and Bryce Harper were voted as starters for the MLB All-Star game. Voting continues on Sunday for the rest of the players who will join them– I’ll share my picks for who is most deserving next week. In the meantime, there were some games played last night…
The Minnesota Twins rocked Arizona Diamondbacks starter Jordan Montgomery– he gave up eight runs in just 2.2 innings, and the Twins won 13-6. Poor Monty- he had a really had a bad day at the office.
On the flip side, George Springer hit two three-run home runs in the first two innings. Springer and the play of the day (below) helped the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Yankees 9-2.
Los Angeles Angels rookie Davis Daniel twirled eight shutout innings in his first career start, leading his team to a 5-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
It feels like the young Orioles stars take turns doing cool stuff every day. This time it was catcher Adley Rutschman, who hit a home run from one knee as part of an 11-2 dismantling of the Texas Rangers.
NBA
The NBA Draft is now complete. Although it’s rare that players drafted in the second round make a big impact, there are a few notable selections worth pointing out:
We begin with Bronny James. To no one’s surprise, the Los Angeles Lakers selected Bronny with the 55th pick. Look, we know that his dad is on the team. But if you are unlikely to take an impact player at pick 55 anyway, why not make history? Reward a hard-working kid who came back from a cardiac arrest during school last fall, and see what happens. I’ll be rooting for the first ever active father-son duo in the NBA to take the court together in purple and gold.
The Utah Jazz quietly had a great draft. In round one, the Jazz got two talented scorers in Cody Williams (Colorado) and Isaiah Collier (USC). And in round two, they added versatile big man Kyle Filipowski (Duke). Good work by Utah.
Ulrich Chomche made history as the first draft pick to come out of the NBA Academy in Africa. Chomche was selected by the Toronto Raptors 57th overall.
And finally, here’s a couple of guys that because of the team that picked them, you should probably keep your eye on: Pelle Larson (Miami Heat), Harrison Ingram (Spurs), Cam Spencer (Grizzlies), and Tyler Kolek (Knicks). And two undrafted free agents, N’Faly Dante (Rockets) and PJ Hall (Nuggets). Those are my six dark horses– you’ve been warned.
WNBA
Caitlin Clark became the fastest player to reach 300 points, 100 rebounds, and 100 assists in WNBA history. She also did this again, which I think is officially her signature move. However, Clark’s Indiana Fever lost to the Seattle Storm 89-77. Seattle’s Jewell Loyd led all scorers with 34 points.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Each of the major award winners in the NHL were announced last night, highlighted by Nathan MacKinnon sweeping the Hart and Lindsay trophies (MVP from both the writers and the players). In addition to MacKinnon, Quinn Matthews won best defenseman, Connor Bedard won rookie of the year, and Connor Hellebuyck won the Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goalie.
A jury ruled against the NFL in an antitrust lawsuit in regards to NFL Sunday Ticket. Apparently the league was charging too much and limiting access to out-of-market games. The NFL is appealing, of course, but the future of watching football may have just gotten a whole lot cheaper.
Novak Djokovic “gave a thumbs up” when asked if he was playing in Wimbledon. The 24-time Grand Slam champion has recovered from torn meniscus surgery in just three weeks, and will be the number two seed in the grass court tournament starting Monday.
Some people are really, really fast. If you want proof, take a moment to watch Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone win her 400 meter hurdle heat at the US Olympic Trials. The trials continue all weekend as we get closer and closer to the games in Paris.
PLAY OF THE DAY
This one will make you smile…
Just how they drew it up 😳
