The Panthers win the Cup

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, June 24.

NHL

Monday June 24th should be remembered as an incredible day for all sports, but the leading story is the Stanley Cup. Congratulations to the Florida Panthers! Game seven lived up to the hype, with both teams playing high-level hockey for a full three periods. In the end, the home team secured a 2-1 victory. Here are the main takeaways:

  • Panthers head coach Paul Maurice is now 5-0 in game sevens. Until last night, however, no one had coached more games or won more games without winning the Cup than Maurice. You can see how easily things may have changed in the sequence that led to the game-winning goal.

  • Connor McDavid is the sixth player and second non-goalie to win the Conn Smythe (playoff MVP) as a member of the Stanley Cup losing team. McDavid had 42 points throughout the playoffs, including 34 assists– a new playoff record.

  • It’s the first Stanley Cup win for the Panthers, who successfully avenged their loss in the finals from a year ago. Canada’s Stanley Cup drought has now extended to 31 years.

  • Overall, it’s been pretty good couple of weeks for Jayson Tatum and Matthew Tkachuk. Just two champions from The Lou.

NCAA BASEBALL

Monday’s other championship game ended with a first-ever College World Series for the University of Tennessee. Holding a steady lead through the entire game, it got a little tight for the Vols down the stretch. Although Texas A&M brought the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning, Tennessee was able to close out the win 6-5. The key to the game might have been this slide, one of the slickest baseball moves I’ve ever seen.

MLB

Let’s run through what turned out to be an incredible slate of Monday night games:

  • Bryce Harper hit a home run and had five RBIs, leading the Phillies to an 8-1 win over the Detroit Tigers. The highlight came in the third inning, when the Phillies turned a triple play. One of the rarest and coolest plays in sports.

  • The Padres and Red Sox both had walk-off wins in their respective games, and with their entire roster wearing Willie Mays’ number 24, the San Francisco Giants added a walk-off win of their own.

That’s three walk-offs and a triple play. Plus Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit this mammoth home run over the Green Monster. Not having fun yet? I now present two of the nominations for catch of the year:

The Cardinals won 4-3 over the Braves. The Orioles lost 3-2 to the Guardians. And that fan might be my new favorite player.

SOCCER

The most shocking result of the day came from the Copa America. Brazil, a heavy favorite over Costa Rica, was held scoreless in a 0-0 draw. Despite dominating the game with 73% possession and 19 shot attempts, Brazil was unable to find the back of the net.

The game of the day came from the Euros. One minute after his penalty shot was saved, it looked like Croatia captain Luka Modric had secured a victory for his side with this sublime finish. Needing to rescue a draw in order to advance in the tournament, defending champion Italy came up with the play of the day (below). The Italians scored on the last breaths of stoppage time, and the game ended 1-1. Heartbreak for Modric and the Croatians. Ecstasy for Italy.

OLYMPIC TRIALS

Defending Olympic gold medalist Athing Mu fell during her 800 meter race in the US Olympic trials yesterday, costing her a spot in this year’s games. She’s still eligible to make the relay team, but a tough loss for Mu and the US squad.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

While the Panthers and Oilers battled it out on the ice, the Senators started making moves for next year. Ottawa struck a deal for Boston Bruins goalie Linus Ullmark, sending Boston a package highlighted by first round pick in this year’s upcoming draft.

A couple noteworthy announcements from the NBA. Golden State Warriors assistant coach Kenny Atkinson has been hired as the new head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Scottie Barnes signed a new five-year rookie max deal with the Toronto Raptors. And new Lakers head coach J.J. Redick had a lot to say at his introductory press conference, including the unfortunate announcement that he is no longer podcasting.

PLAY OF THE DAY

If you’ve clicked on any of the links in this issue, you know this goal beat out a lot of really tough competition for play of the day honors. Don’t worry, it won’t disappoint.

Take another look from this angle:

A superb finish at the most dramatic moment of the game. Forza Azzuri!
