Weekend Recap
Good Morning! Today is Monday, June 24 and here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
NHL
A week ago, it seemed like the NHL season was over. The Florida Panthers had a gritty team, an unstoppable goalie, and a 3-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Finals. All of a sudden, the series has flipped on its head.
The Oilers won 5-1 in game six Friday night in Edmonton, controlling the game from start to finish and gifting all of us the best two words in sports: Game Seven. The crucial point Friday night may have been an overturned goal– you tell me if this was offsides or not. Either way, Connor McDavid and the Oilers have won three games in a row, outscoring the Panthers 18-5 along the way. Edmonton is the first NHL team since 1945 to force a game seven in the finals after facing a 3-0 deficit.
GOLF
Scottie Scheffler just keeps winning. Tied at 22 under with Tom Kim, Scheffler won after just one playoff hole. There were plenty of highlights from The Travelers Championship this weekend– Colin Morikawa did a magic trick with a golf ball, Cameron Young shot a 59, just the 13th player in PGA history to put up a round under 60– but as it’s been all year, the story ends with Scheffler holding a trophy.
NCAA BASEBALL
We’ve got a series in Omaha! Texas A&M looked dominant in game one of the championship round of the College World Series, taking down number one seed Tennessee 9-5. The Aggies controlled the game right from the beginning and never looked back.
In game two, however, the Vols fought back. After going down 1-0 in the first inning, Tennessee held A&M scoreless the rest of the game. Their 4-1 victory pushed the CWS to a deciding game three; a champion will be crowned this evening.
SOCCER
No one could blame you if you spent your entire weekend sitting on the couch watching soccer. With both the Euros and Copa America in full swing, there’s quite literally goals scored all day, all around the world– check out top plays (below) for the ones you have to see to believe. With so many being played, the best way to catch up is a simple standings update. But first, a quick word from Captain America.
The US got off to a great start in their Copa America run, beating Bolivia 2-0. Christian Pulisic started the scoring with this beauty off a corner kick, and Folarin Balogun added another. The US will be disappointed not to have won by more, but you can’t complain about a dominant 2-0 victory to start a tournament. Each of the other favorites who played this weekend– Uruguay and Mexico– won their opening matches in the tournament, too.
Now for that standings update: not every team has played yet in the Copa America, so we’ll hold off on that one. Over in the Euros, the top two teams in each group advance to the round of 16, plus the top four 3rd place teams overall. Group A is already complete– Germany finished 1st, Switzerland 2nd, and Scotland was eliminated. Hungary remains alive as a 3rd place team. Here’s what the rest of the tournament looks like.
GROUP B | POINTS | NEXT MATCH |

Each team has one more game left in group play– a win is three points, a draw is one, and ties are broken by goal differential.
MLB
A lot of baseball was played over the weekend. Here are the standout teams and performers:
He missed some time early in the season due to injury, but Twins third baseman Royce Lewis can’t stop hitting home runs. In fact, he has more games with a home run this season (10) than he has games played without one (8)
After winning game one at Rickwood Field in Alabama, the Cardinals swept the Giants back at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Sonny Gray took a perfect game into the 7th inning on Sunday for the Redbirds, and outfielder Alec Burleson had two homeruns and seven RBIs through the weekend.
The Rockies beat the Nationals on a walk-off pitch clock violation. Absolutely thrilling.
They had the worst record in the MLB during the month of May. They have the best record in the MLB during the month of June. You guessed it– that team could only be the New York Mets. The Mets took two out of three from the Cubs in Chicago, although star closer Edwin Diaz is in trouble after being caught using an illegal substance on his pitching hand.
Shohei Ohtani hit two home runs over 450 feet against his former team, the Los Angeles Angels. The Dodgers and Angels may have split the two-game series, but we all know who the winner really is.
And finally, two different generations of aces dominated on Sunday. Paul Skenes continued his incredible start for the Pirates, striking out eight over seven innings of one-run ball. And Max Scherzer made his season debut for the Rangers, throwing five innings and allowing just one hit.
WNBA
Caitlin Clark set an Indiana Fever record with 13 assists and did this. On the other side, Angel Reese had 25 points and 16 rebounds– her eighth straight double-double. In the end, Reese and the Chicago Sky won 88-87. Add another great battle to the story of this rivalry.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
In Olympic Trials news, the action in the pool is mostly finished up, highlighted by more Katie Ledecky dominance. As swimming ends, team USA trials for track and field are just beginning. The big story so far is Sha’Carri Richardson, who won the 100-meter dash for the second straight time, and will now get to go to the Olympics for the first time. On the men’s side, Noah Lyles won the 100 meter dash, and a 16-year old is setting all kinds of records in the 400 meters.
There’s a new number one in American men’s tennis! Tommy Paul won the Queen’s title in London, moving his ranking up to 12 in the world. No one is happier for Paul than Matthew McConaughey.
The strangest basketball court in college sports is no longer. Say goodbye to the trees of the Oregon basketball court and hello to this much easier to look at but still nature-themed home of the Ducks.
And sadly, the Cinderella story of the US cricket team has (at least temporarily) come to an end. Team USA was eliminated from the T20 World Cup over the weekend.
TOP PLAYS OF THE WEEKEND
6: Breanna Stewart shows why she’s one of the greatest basketball players in the world.
5: It came in a losing effort, but you have to respect this incredible goal by Panthers captain Alexander Barkov.
4: Some top plays come purely from circumstance. This goal to keep Hungary’s tournament hopes alive is one of those great moments.
3: One of the best catches I’ve seen a long time, courtesy of the Tennessee Volunteers.
