Summer of Soccer/MLB at Rickwood

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, June 20.

SOCCER

We begin our soccer coverage in Germany, where the Euros continue to excite-

Back stateside, over 70,000 people showed up to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta to watch Lionel Messi and Argentina kick off the Copa America against Canada. Both sides had plenty of chances, and this energetic game could have ended 5-5. Only Argentina was able to capitalize on goal, however, and the defending champions earned a 2-0 victory.

MLB

Just checking the box score, the Cardinals beating the Giants 6-5 isn’t especially noteworthy. However, the Rickwood Field game in Birmingham, Alabama was more than just a baseball game. The pre-game tributes honoring the Negro Leagues and Willie Mays were poignant and moving. Reggie Jackson spoke about the hardships he faced. Baseball loves its history; this game not only paid homage to the past, it made an impact on the story going forward. There’s eight links in this paragraph that are each worth clicking, and I’ll add one last video below. Props to MLB, Fox, and everyone involved in this production for a successful evening.

A few highlights from elsewhere in the big leagues:

GOLF

The Travelers Championship teed off yesterday in Connecticut. After one round, Tom Kim has a two shot lead on the field at eight under. Four guys are tied right behind him on the leaderboard at six under, however, including Rickie Fowler and Will Zalatoris. And world number one Scottie Scheffler leads a talented group well within striking distance behind them.

TENNIS

In his first tournament after winning the French Open, Carlos Alcaraz was upset in the second round by 22-year old Jack Draper. Playing on grass in front of a home crowd in London, Draper took down Alcaraz 7-6, 6-3. It’s time to familiarize yourself with the young British left-hander, who won his first professional title last week. Maybe check in with your local sportsbook ahead of Wimbledon.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

It’s been less than a week since the NBA finals, and already the offseason is in full swing. In the first big move, the Oklahoma City Thunder traded Josh Giddey to the Chicago Bulls for Alex Caruso. It’s an interesting one-for-one swap. Caruso’s fit in OKC is obvious as a proven veteran defender. The Bulls get a talented young playmaker, but it’s unclear exactly how Giddey fits with the rest of their roster.

The Los Angeles Lakers have hired JJ Redick as their new head coach. Reddick has never coached above the youth level, although he’s shown throughout his playing career and on his podcast with Lakers star LeBron James that Redick has an exceptional basketball mind. Realistic or not, the expectations for James and the Lakers is another championship. Only time will tell if Redick can accomplish that goal.

Not to be outdone by their basketball counterparts, the LA Kings announced a brand new logo. It’s gray and black and says Kings on it, just like their old one.

It’s rare that I would recommend a movie I have yet to see, but you should check out the new documentary about Roger Federer that came out last night on Amazon Prime. A unique opportunity to see the final days on tour of one the greatest sportsman of all-time.

PLAY OF THE DAY

As promised, here’s the play of day from the Tampa Bay Rays center fielder.

Didn’t see that feature in the latest Apple update. Wow.

TODAYS’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)

STANLEY CUP FINALS: Panthers @ Oilers, 8 PM on ABC

  • Edmonton accomplished their goal and “dragged Florida back to Alberta” for game six. Can they extend the series one more time and force a game seven? Or will the Panthers finally close this one out?

SOCCER: Netherlands vs France, 3 PM on Fox; Peru vs Chile, 8 PM on FS1

  • Kylian Mbappe is now a masked man after breaking his nose in France’s last game. We’ll see how the new-look Mbappe and his French squad fare against the Dutch in this battle of top teams.

  • The Copa America action picks up with multiple games all weekend, highlighted by these two South American teams facing off.

THIS WEEKEND’S BIG GAMES

GOLF: The Travelers Championship, all weekend on CBS

BASEBALL: Braves @ Yankees, all weekend

  • If you’re going to watch an MLB game this weekend, I’d recommend this clash of top teams. Chris Sale starts things off on the mound for Atlanta tonight in game one.

NCAA BASEBALL: Tennessee vs Texas A&M, 7:30 PM Saturday and 2 PM Sunday on ESPN

  • The College World Series is an all-SEC matchup. Tennessee looks to become the second number one seed in history to win the CWS. If necessary, game three will take place on Monday.

WNBA: Indiana Fever @ Chicago Sky, 4 PM Sunday on ESPN

  • Caitlin Clark vs Angel Reese, round three in the pros. Reese just set the record for consecutive double-doubles by a rookie. Will she lead the Sky to their first win against their rivals? Or will the Fever continue their hot streak, having won three games in a row. The last matchup between these teams broke viewership records for a WNBA regular season game.

SOCCER: USA vs Bolivia, 6 PM Sunday on Fox

  • Primetime on Sunday night, the US of A starts their quest to win the 2024 Copa America. America is favored in this one, but with Uruguay and Panama also in their group, it will be crucial for Christian Pulisic and the US team to start their tournament with a win.

An action-packed weekend awaits! See you again on Monday.
