The Celtics are NBA Champions
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, June 17.
NBA
The Boston Celtics are NBA champions! After a slight hiccup in game four, the Celtics left little doubt closing out the series in game five. They defeated the Dallas Mavericks 106-88– here are the main takeaways:
Both teams got off to a slow start. Boston closed the first quarter on a 9-0 run, however, and their lead was stretched to double-digits. On the way to a record 18th championship, they never looked back. And check out the play of the day (below) for the even more impressive finish to the second quarter.
Luka Doncic put up 28 points in the loss, but his supporting cast (outside of Josh Green) struggled to score once again. Just like these Celtics lost in their first finals appearance, I bet Luka and Co. will be back and better than ever in the near future.
It’s the first championship win for veteran Al Horford and the unicorn Kristaps Porzingis. The two Boston big men were crucial to the team all season. And while this is Jrue Holliday’s second title, winning this season after being traded by the Milwaukee Bucks has to feel incredible. Holliday is one of the best defenders in the NBA and maybe the most underrated player in the game. These three, along with Derrick White, make up the incredible supporting cast for head coach Joe Mazzulla and…
…Boston’s young stars, who finally got it done. Jayson Tatum led the winning team with 31 points and 11 assists, but Jaylen Brown’s consistent performance throughout the series earned him Finals MVP. With these two leading the way, the Celtics dynasty may have just begun.
MLB
St. Louis Cardinals ace Sonny Gray pitched 7.2 innings of one-run baseball, leaving the game with a three run lead.… and yet it took the Cards 12 innings to take down the Miami Marlins. Rookie shortstop and young star Masyn Winn hit a go-ahead two-run home run, and outfielder Dylan Carlson made this spectacular throw in the bottom of the 12th to win the game 7-6.
Another day, another dominant outing from Paul Skenes. The Pirates rookie had seven strikeouts and gave up just one run in six innings, as Pittsburgh beat the Reds 4-1. Skenes has allowed three or fewer runs in each of his starts.
Stop me if you’ve seen this before– Kyle Schwarber hit two home runs and the Phillies won. This time it was a 9-2 victory against the Padres. An added bonus for Philly– all-star shortstop Trea Turner had two hits in his first game back from the injured list.
NCAA BASEBALL
Two-way player Jac Caglianone didn’t have his best stuff on the mound, but his three-run home run carried Florida in an elimination game against North Carolina State.
Texas A&M cruised to a 5-1 victory over Kentucky, moving one step closer to the championship series. Kentucky is still alive, however, taking on Florida tomorrow. Both team’s pitching staffs will be tested with the quick turnaround.
SOCCER
Not the most exciting day on the pitch, but with three games, you earned three summaries. Here we go:
In game one, Romania topped Ukraine 3-0. The underdog’s victory was highlighted by this magnificent strike midway through the first half.
The first true shocker of the tournament– Belgium, the number three team in the world, was shutout 1-0 in a loss to Slovakia. A huge upset, the pressure has escalated for Belgium, and their tournament doesn’t get any easier going forward.
Heavy favorite France took down Austria 1-0 in a game that was a bit more competitive than expected. The big news, however, is the injury to French striker Kylian Mbappe. Mbappe left the game bloodied, and is believed to have a broken nose.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Canadian tennis player Milos Raonic set a new professional record for most aces in a three-set match, with a whopping 47. Raonic and his prolific serve defeated Cam Norrie in the first round of the Queen’s Court Championships in England.
The Dodgers unveiled new uniforms yesterday, the team’s second in the “City Connect” series. Yes, they are, in fact, going to wear them.
After a gut-wrenching loss at the U.S. Open over the weekend, Rory McIlroy announced he is taking a three-week break from golf. Most of us take a vacation from work by going to play golf. Not really sure Rory’s next course of action.
PLAY OF THE DAY
Apologies to the fantastic goal by Romania, but nothing tops a championship buzzer-beater…
