Quarterfinals are set at Wimbledon
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, July 8.
TENNIS
Never bet against Taylor and the number 13… after going down two sets to none against Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz pulled off an incredible comeback. The number 13 seed moved into the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the second time.
Elsewhere on the grounds, the top-ranked Ukrainian Elena Svitolina won an emotional match. And Novak Djokovic is embracing a villain role, complaining about the crowd booing him during his match against Holger Rune. Alex de Minaur would be a tough test for Djokovic up next, but he appeared to injure himself on match point last night. Is Novak peaking at just the right moment?
With the quarterfinals all set, let’s take a look at the final eight on each side…
Two Italians and two Americans highlight a star-studded final eight. At the risk of completely embarrassing myself, here are my predictions: Sinner over Alcaraz and Djokovic over Fritz in the semifinals, with Sinner winning the title. Already second-guessing each of those picks…
Might as well try a few more predictions– I have Rybakina over Ostapenko and Navarro over Vekic, ending in Rybakina winning her second Wimbledon. With the draw this wide-open, though, I wouldn’t be surprised if any of these eight win it all.
MLB
Only a few games played last night in Major League Baseball. But as always, there were a few notable moments:
Cincinnati Reds rookie Rece Hinds absolutely demolished his first career home run. The Reds shut-out the Rockies 6-0. And it wouldn’t be a Reds win without Elly De La Cruz doing something awesome.
Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald blew his third save in a row, this time giving up a game-tying home run to Braves catcher Sean Murphy with two outs in the ninth inning. Atlanta went on to win the game 5-4 in the 11th.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
She’s “not Dunne yet”… LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne, the highest-earning female athlete in college sports, announced she’ll be back at school for a fifth year. LSU won their first national championship in gymnastics last season.
The PGA announced Keegan Bradley will be the captain of next year’s US Ryder Cup team. Bradley will spend the next year picking from a talented group of golfers– and navigating a lot of politics– as the US prepares to host team Europe in New York next year.
LeBron James, Steph Curry, and Anthony Davis led a scrimmage of the best basketball players in America… and all anyone can talk about is incoming Duke freshman Cooper Flagg. A member of the US Select team practicing with the Olympic squad, Flagg has impressed everyone on both offense and defense. Forgive me if I’m pre-angry about Flagg leading the Blue Devils next March.
I made fun of the NBA Summer League yesterday, and they responded quickly. Ninth overall pick Zach Edey made this tip-in for the Memphis Grizzlies to send the game to overtime. It still doesn’t really mean anything, but I’ll never knock a dramatic ending to a basketball game.
PLAY OF THE DAY
Today’s POD is a web gem from Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson:

My favorite part might be the throw home– it saved a run, which ultimately won the game.
TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
TENNIS: Wimbledon quarterfinals, 8:30 AM on ESPN and ESPN+
Four singles matches today, starting with Lulu Sun against Donna Vekic and Jannik Sinner against Daniil Medvedev. Following them are two Americans, as Emma Navarro takes on Jasmine Paolini and Tommy Paul looks to upset Carlos Alcaraz.
SOCCER: Spain vs France, 3 PM on Fox; Argentina vs Canada, 8 PM on FS1
Did you also feel like something was missing yesterday? Don’t worry, the semifinals are here! First up, two heavyweights battle it out in the Euros. I’m expecting a low-scoring game, but many of the best players in the world will be on the field for Spain and France. In the nightcap, we’ve got a rematch from the first day of the Copa America. Canada has been the surprise of the tournament– can they upset Messi and Argentina?
MLB: Dodgers @ Phillies, 6:40 PM; Royals @ Cardinals, 7:45 PM; Braves @ Diamondbacks, 9:40 PM
Three games for three different types of baseball fans… first up, the two best teams in the National League go head-to-head in Philly. This will be a highlighted series all week. Next, we’ve got a regional rivalry in the Midwest, as Kansas City drives down I-80 to take on St. Louis. Finally, you’ll want to stay up late to see the best pitching matchup of today’s slate, as Chris Sale and the Braves battle Zac Gallen and the Diamondbacks.
