Something for everyone
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, July 4.
MLB
So many fireworks from the MLB yesterday… let’s see if we can’t recap the biggest of them:
Any time Trea Turner slides like this, it’s worth watching… although Turner and the Phillies lost real badly to the Cubs. Switch-hitter Ian Happ hit a three-run home run from each side of the plate in the 10-2 Chicago victory.
Steven Kwan just keeps hitting. The MLB leader in batting average (.367) smashed his eighth home run of the year and the Cleveland Guardians beat the White Sox 8-4.
The Cincinnati Reds crushed the Yankees 8-4. It’s the first time the Reds have swept New York since the 1976 World Series. 1776, 1976… is there something here?
Jesse Winker hit a pinch-hit solo home run in the 8th inning as the Washington Nationals beat the Mets 1-0. Good for our nation’s capitol to win today, right?
Despite this remarkable catch by rookie Wyatt Langford, the Padres took down the Rangers 3-1.
A very strange game in Miami… Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta threw seven scoreless innings, but the Marlins tied the game as soon as he left. Red Sox centerfielder Jarren Duran got caught in a rundown but escaped. Finally, Boston won 6-5 in the 12th. I guess a win is a win.
Christian Walker might need to move to Los Angeles. The Diamondbacks first baseman hit not one, but two more home runs last night at Dodger Stadium. That’s a total of five homers in the three-game series. Not surprisingly, Arizona won this game 9-3.
TENNIS
Excluding mixed-doubles, Sir Andy Murray played his last ever main draw match at Wimbledon yesterday, taking the court with his brother Jamie. The Murrays lost in straight sets, but the touching tributes to Andy and his legendary career were remarkable. The three-time Grand Slam champion will be remembered for his tenacity, his dry humor, and his impressive success despite enormous pressure and incredulous odds.
Plenty of other action around the grounds! Some highlights…
Taylor Fritz won a testy second-round match against Frenchmen Arthur Rinderknech. Apparently these two have a bit of Bad Blood– during the post-match handshake, the American told his defeated opponent, “have a nice flight home.” You tell ‘em, Taylor.
A few more upsets took place at the All-England Club: number five seed Jessica Pegula lost to Xinyu Wang, seven seed Hubert Hurkacz lost to the young Frenchman Arthur Fils, and eleven seed Stefanos Tsitsipas was upset by Emil Ruusuvuori.
The British just beat up on themselves yesterday. The number one ranked British man and woman each lost to the number two Brit. Cam Norrie won against Jack Draper, and Harriet Dart beat Katie Boulter. July 4 won’t be remembered fondly in merry old England.
SOCCER
Argentina took control early of the first Copa America quarterfinal game, going up 1-0 on Ecuador. Just when it seemed the game was over, however, Ecuador stunned Messi and the defending World Cup winners, tying the game late into stoppage time. The match went to penalty kicks, and even though Messi missed his attempt, Argentina escaped with a victory. Emiliano Martinez made some great saves and celebrated accordingly.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
The Golden State Warriors completed a sign-and-trade with the Philadelphia 76ers for shooting guard Buddy Hield. Nobody can replace Klay Thompson, but this is a savvy move by Golden State to pick up another elite shooter three-point shooter.
One last eating update of the year, I promise. At Coney Island, Miki Sudo set the world record in the women’s contest with 51 hot dogs. Meanwhile in the men’s competition, Patrick Bertoletti won with 58 hot dogs in ten minutes. Banned champion Joey Chestnut did his own hot dog eating event… he put down an unfathomable 57 hot dogs in five minutes. Not to be outdone, I ate two hot dogs yesterday. The history books will remember how the four of us combined for over 150.
Amidst rumors of the US Men’s National Soccer head coaching job opening up, Jurgen Klopp decided to post a tribute to his time traveling in the USA. One of the best soccer coaches and smartest tacticians in the world, I think Klopp knows exactly what message he’s sending. Don’t get our hopes up Jurgen!

For the first time ever, we’ve got a three-way tie for play of the day. Here’s play number one, featuring the one and only Novak Djokovic:
