A pommel horse hero for Team USA
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, July 29.
OLYMPICS
No preamble, no intro… let’s get right to the good stuff:
Event of the Day: Men’s Gymnastics Team Final
The American men hadn’t won a medal in this event since 2008– that drought ended yesterday, as Team USA took home a bronze medal.
Each member of the team contributed to the historic finish, but no one captured the hearts of gymnastics fans like Stephen Nedoroscik. A pommel horse specialist, the bespectacled Nedoroscik became a Clark Kent/Superman figure for Team USA. He waited all day for his only event, and then as the last man to compete in the entire competition, Nedoroscik delivered. A defining moment of the Paris games for the United States.
Elsewhere on the podium, Japan made a late surge to overtake China for the gold medal. Up three points going into the final rotation, China fell twice on the horizontal bar. It was enough for Japan to win by 0.532 points.
Team USA:
Former NBA player Chase Budinger is now an Olympic beach volleyball star. Budinger and his partner Miles Evans won their first match for Team USA, playing a lot of great points along the way.
Team USA field hockey tied Spain 1-1, thanks in large part to this incredible game-saving play.
The American women’s water polo team is off to a strong start, with a 1-1 record after two matches of group play. The team’s biggest fan? None other than Flavor Flav, who decided to sponsor the three-time gold medalists when he learned they work other jobs outside the pool.
Business as usual for Team USA women’s basketball, who rolled to a 102-76 win over Japan. The Americans are heavy favorites to win another gold medal.
Around the world:
Novak Djokovic cruised to a straight sets victory over his forever rival Rafael Nadal. It’s clear Nadal doesn’t have the game he used to, although Rafa still manages to produce some incredible moments.
Canadian Summer McIntosh is the name to know if you’re a fan of swimming. The 17-year old blew the competition out of the water on her way to a gold medal in the 400 meter individual medley.
The best race of the day came in the men’s 200 meter freestyle. You have to see Romania’s David Popovici pull out a come-from-behind gold medal victory.

MLB
We’re watching and learning about a lot of new sports during the Olympic games. Time to check in on America’s pastime, baseball:
The Blue Jays and Orioles split a double-header yesterday, but two players had remarkable days. Toronto first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 7-10 with 5 RBI and 16 total bases. And we have to shoutout the toughness of Orioles catcher James McCann, who remained in the game and caught nine innings despite being hit in the face with a 95 MPH fastball.
A lot of really high scoring games yesterday! The Yankees beat the Phillies 14-4, the Mets beat the Twins 15-2, and the Red Sox beat the Mariners 14-7. Something in the water, I guess.
The final game of the night ended with a walk-off, pinch-hit home run from Corbin Carroll. It’s been a tough season for last year’s rookie of the year, but Carroll came up clutch as the Diamondbacks beat the Nationals 9-8.
Apologies for an error in yesterday’s Remix– the trade deadline is actually TODAY at 6 PM. In any case, a lot of players have changed teams in the last 24 hours. Here are the ones you should know about:
We start with a three-team trade: The Cardinals acquired Tommy Pham and Erick Fedde from the White Sox. The White Sox got a group of young prospects from the Dodgers. And the Dodgers added Tommy Edman from the Cardinals and Michael Kopech from Chicago. Got all that?
The Cleveland Guardians and Atlanta Braves each strengthened their outfields– Cleveland picked up Lane Thomas from the Nationals, while the Braves reunited with their 2021 World Series MVP, acquiring Jorge Soler from San Francisco.
Seattle made another move to improve their offense, making a trade for Toronto third baseman Justin Turner.
And arguably the biggest move of the day comes from Houston, who sent out a trio of highly-regarded prospects for Blue Jays starter Yusei Kikuchi. It’s hard to judge most trade deadline deals in the moment– this is one that most everyone agrees is a very large overpay by the Astros.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
The Minnesota Wild signed defenseman Brock Faber to an eight-year, $68 million extension. Faber placed second in rookie of the year voting last year, and now he’s signed the largest deal in franchise history.
PLAY OF THE DAY
Down one run, Bobby Witt Jr. hit a grand slam in the eighth inning to give the Kansas City Royals a late lead. Then, he closed out the win with this web gem:
Bobby Witt Jr. ICE COLD to end the game 🥶

You know it’s a good play when you beat out a bunch of gold medalists. Impressive stuff from the Royals shortstop.

We’ve got a pitcher’s duel scheduled for Philly, as Gerrit Cole takes on Aaron Nola. In San Diego, a divisional battle features Tyler Glasnow on the mound in his first start back from the injured list for the Dodgers. Another great day of baseball!
