No-hitter in San Diego!
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, July 25.
OLYMPICS
USA men’s rugby had an impressive win yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals against Australia. Unfortunately, the quarterfinal match was the end of their run to the podium. Tough to play two massive games in one day, but nonetheless a great showing by the Americans.
On the pitch, the US women’s soccer team got off to a sizzling start, beating Zambia 3-0. Trinity Rodman scored a beauty to start the game, and Mallory Swanson scored two goals in a minute to triple the lead. It wasn’t the cleanest performance by the Americans, but it was a dominant win and the team will surely be happy with that result.
Remember that story about a staffer on the Canadian women’s soccer team flying a drone over New Zealand’s practice? Well, Canada’s head coach Bev Priestman has now been removed from her position. Canada won their first game without Priestman, but we’ll see how they do going forward.
MLB
Every day you see something new in baseball, and yesterday was no different. Let’s dive in:
We begin with history in San Diego, as Dylan Cease threw a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals. It’s Cease’s first career no-no and just the second in Padres history. Like all great no-hitters, there was a unique play in the field that preserved the feat, too.
The Baltimore Orioles beat the Miami Marlins 7-6 in a strange extra-innings game. While the game itself was a good one, you’ve got to see this moment from the fourth inning: Orioles rookie Connor Norby hits a home run, and his teammate in the bullpen catches the ball in his hat! Even better, it’s not the first time that Cionel Perez has done this! No-hitters are cool, but this is why baseball is fun!
I’m not sure how they do it, but Mets make their way into The Remix every single morning. This time, it’s because Jeff McNeil hit a walk-off single to beat the Braves 3-2. New York is now just half a game behind Atlanta for the first wild card.
Max Scherzer and Clayton Kershaw are at the backends of their storied careers, but they’re still finding ways to contribute to their teams. Scherzer reached 3,400 career strikeouts and pitched six dominant innings in a Rangers win. Kershaw made his first start of the season, and with a little help from his friend Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers beat the Giants.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Someone on the Las Vegas Raiders had the bright idea to make a video with a Kermit the Frog-Patrick Mahomes doll. I don’t know about you, but if the Super Bowl champs had beaten my team over and over again, I don’t think I would want to taunt them.
We’ve got trades! The MLB trade deadline is less than a week away, and teams are starting to make moves. The Diamondbacks acquired reliever A.J. Puk from the Marlins, but the real headliner is the Seattle Mariners making a deal for Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena. Arozarena should be bring some much needed pop to the Seattle offense. Good move.
College sports have changed rapidly the last few years, and it appears another big move is on the horizon. As part of a settlement in the House vs NCAA case focused on paying damages to former athletes, schools will no longer be limited in the number of scholarships they can offer. Sounds like a good thing, but the fallout from that decision are caps on roster sizes that will likely mean the end of walk-ons. Nothing is official yet, but Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney is one of a growing number of coaches who are against this proposed rule change.
PLAY OF THE DAY
Miami Marlins center fielder Jazz Chisholm made a great diving catch yesterday. Unfortunately, the moment was not chosen for play of the day… because Jazz made an even better catch earlier!

TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
OLYMPICS: Opening Ceremony, 2 PM on NBC (but I’d tune in early)
For the first time ever, the Olympic opening ceremony will not be in a stadium. All the athletes will be on boats, traveling through the city of Paris on the Seine. Prepare for stunning scenes and beautiful fashion, as the spectacle of the Olympics takes on the city of love.
THIS WEEKEND’S BIG GAMES
MLB: Dodgers @ Astros, Yankees @ Red Sox, Braves @ Mets
Paris is six hours ahead of EST, so if you’re watching the Olympics live, you might find yourself with a break in the action during the evening. That’s where these three great rivalries step in– Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, check out some of the top teams in baseball.
OLYMPICS: Six USA teams have big games over the weekend (all games on NBC, USA and/or Peacock)
Men’s soccer vs New Zealand, 1 PM Saturday
Field hockey vs Argentina, 1:45 PM Saturday
Men’s volleyball vs Argentina, 3 PM Saturday
Men’s water polo vs Italy, 9 AM Sunday
Men’s basketball vs Serbia, 11:15 AM Sunday
Women’s soccer vs Germany, 3 PM Sunday
Plus beach volleyball, sailing, badminton, and so much more… the games have begun!
WANT TO WATCH MORE OF THE OLYMPICS? THREE TIPS:
Download the Olympics app or bookmark the NBC events schedule at this link. You’ll get the full schedule for each day, plus the ability to search for specific countries, athletes, and medal rounds. It makes everything a lot easier.
Remember that Paris is six hours ahead of EST, so most events will be over by mid-afternoon. If you miss anything, don’t worry– NBC does a recap show every evening.
Pick a random event and go all-in! As much as I’d love to, I can’t highlight every event in this space… but that doesn’t mean a sport isn’t worth watching! Whether it’s speed walking or table tennis, you really can’t go wrong.
