A good day to be LeBron James
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, July 22.
MLB
Monday night in Major League Baseball did not disappoint! Let’s get to some highlights, shall we?
The Yankees beat the Rays 9-1 and Juan Soto hit two home runs. It took Soto a full 37 seconds to round the bases after hitting the first one– I guess when you’re a superstar and your team is winning, you really want to enjoy the moment.
This play sums up Monday’s game for the Cleveland Guardians. Cleveland fell to Detroit 8-2, although I’m sure it felt like 80-2.
Bobby Witt Jr. is on an absolute tear right now. The Royals shortstop is 12 for 15 with five extra-base hits and six RBI since the all-star break. Witt was just a single away from he cycle last night against the Diamondbacks when he was unfortunately hit by a pitch. However, the Royals 10-4 and are 4-0 since the return to action.
Another team on a hot streak– the New York Mets won their ninth game in the last 13, beating the Marlins 6-4. Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor hit two home runs and extended his hit streak to 18 games.
Reds ace Hunter Greene pitched seven scoreless innings, as Cincinnati beat Atlanta 4-1. Greene has given up just two earned runs in his last 24.2 innings pitched.
Finally, there were two walk-off wins last night from rookies: Wyatt Langford led the Rangers to 4-3 win, and Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar knocked in the winning run to beat the Red Sox 9-8.
BASKETBALL
Before yesterday’s fifth and final Team USA exhibition game, LeBron James was given the great honor of flag bearer for the United States at Friday’s opening ceremony. On the court, Team USA needed their leader to carry them to a win. LeBron had 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists in a 92-88 victory over Germany. Overall, I’d say it was a pretty good day for the 39 year old.
The Miami Heat beat the Memphis Grizzlies 120-118 in overtime in the finals of the NBA Summer League. Rookie Pelle Larson from Arizona hit the game-winning shot, while former Wake Forest Demon Deacon and current Grizzly Jake LaRavia led all players in scoring with 32 points.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Andy Murray ended the speculation and officially announced that he will be retiring after the Olympics. A two-time gold medalist in singles, Murray is not a favorite to make the podium in Paris. If anyone could pull off one last run at glory, though, it’s Sir Andy. Congratulations to the Brit on a fantastic career.
Warner Brothers/TNT has matched the proposed media rights deal between Amazon and the NBA. What does that mean? Well, there’s likely going to be a legal battle to decide where you watch basketball games, because the NBA signed a deal with Amazon on purpose. The league has deals in place with ESPN/ABC, NBC, and now, apparently, TNT again. We’ll see how this shakes out, but the good news for fans is Inside the NBA might be saved– keep Shaq and Chuck on TV forever!
The Atlanta Braves had a strange start to the week. Second baseman Ozzie Albies was just placed on the injured list with a broken wrist, so the Braves made two moves to fill the loss. First, they called up Nacho Alvarez Jr., their number five prospect. Alvarez went 0-4 in his debut, but I believe Nacho will be a fan-favorite at the ballpark. Second, Atlanta signed veteran utility player Whit Merrifield. Unfortunately, Merrifield got hurt in pre-game warmups before his first game. You can hear the despair in the voice of Braves head coach Brian Snitker.
PLAY OF THE DAY
I’ll give you a Clue to help you solve today’s play of the day– it was Mr. Greene, on the pitcher’s mound, behind his back!
Hunter Greene made this look way too easy 😮

Pretty nifty move, if you ask me.
TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
MLB: Cardinals @ Pirates, 6:40 PM; Giants @ Dodgers, 10:10 PM
Paul Skenes day! Skenes and the red-hot Pirates look to take the second game of the series against a divisional foe. Out west, one of the best rivalries in the game continues after LA won game one.
