Get ready for championship weekend
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, July 11.
TENNIS
If you had Barbora Krejcikova and Jasmine Paolini in the final of Wimbledon… you’re probably lying, because no one predicted this. Here’s how these two made it through the semis and onto the biggest stage in the sport:
Paolini and Donna Vekic played the longest women’s semifinal in Wimbledon history. Vekic continued her strong tournament and forced Paolini to come up with some incredible shots. Finally, after almost three hours, the Italian found a way to win 2-6, 6-4, 7-6. It’s truly been a dream summer for Jasmine Paolini, who’s now made back-to-back Grand Slam finals.
Barbora Krejcikova is the first person this Wimbledon who’s had an answer for the powerful game of Elena Rybakina. It took a bit to find her footing, but Krejcikova came back from an early deficit to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
MLB
Thursday was a great day in Major League Baseball. In case you missed it, here’s what stood out:
I warned you about Paul Skenes day. All he did this time was strike out 11 and throw seven innings without giving up a hit! The Pirates lost the no-hitter on the first batter after Skenes was pulled from the game, which was pretty disappointing. Still, Pittsburgh held on to beat the Brewers 1-0.
The New York Mets recorded their very first shutout of the 2024 season, beating the Nationals 7-0. After sweeping the three game series, New York finds themselves in a playoff spot. The Mets rollercoaster is only at the halfway point, folks. Buckle up.
Another sweep by an NL East team– the Philadelphia Phillies rolled to another win over the Dodgers. Pitching, hitting, defense… Philly looks unstoppable right now.
It’s deja vu all over again! For the second time in three games, Cal Raleigh hit a home run from each side of the plate. Raleigh and the Seattle Mariners destroyed the hapless Angels 11-0.
Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald has struggled to save games lately. Up 1-0 in the ninth inning, his teammate Jake McCarthy made a fantastic grab at the wall to rob Matt Olson and preserve the lead. The D-Backs held on to that 1-0 lead and beat the Braves for the second night in a row.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
The ESPYs were last night in Los Angeles. In case you missed it, they will be back again next year. I guess it wasn’t a big news day.
PLAY OF THE DAY
You might be wondering why a game-saving catch didn’t win play of the day… well, there happened to be another, even better game-saving catch. Take a look at this:
Over the shoulder, in traffic.
José Caballero makes the grab to end it!

The degree of difficulty on this one! What a way to send us to the weekend.
TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
WIMBLEDON: Carlos Alcaraz vs Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic vs Lorenzo Musetti, beginning at 8:30 AM on ESPN
The men’s semifinals begin at 8:30 AM, and knowing the history of these four competitors, they might play until 8:30 PM. Expect plenty of fireworks and highlights in London.
THIS WEEKEND’S BIG GAMES
MLB: Cubs @ Cardinals, Yankees @ Orioles, Royals @ Red Sox, Braves @ Padres; all weekend
It’s the last weekend of games before the all-star break, and Major League Baseball has given us four fantastic matchups. One of the greatest rivalries in sports, the Cubs travel to St. Louis to take on the Cardinals. The Yankees and Orioles are separated at the top of the AL East by just two games. The Royals and Red Sox are one game apart in the AL Wild Card race. And the Braves and Padres are separated by three games in the NL Wild Card. In the words of Sarah Langs– baseball is the best.
WIMBLEDON: Women’s Final, Saturday at 8 AM and Men’s Final, Sunday at 8 AM on ESPN
These times are my best guesses, so make sure you check again if you don’t want to miss anything. Championship weekend begins with the most prestigious event in tennis. I’m picking Paolini over Krejcikova in the women’s final. On the men’s side, I’ll rank Alcaraz, Djokovic, Musetti, and Medvedev in order as most likely champions. No matter what happens, you don’t want to miss this.
SOCCER: Spain vs England at 3 PM and Argentina vs Columbia at 8 PM, Sunday on Fox
Championship weekend concludes with four of the greatest teams in the world facing off for their continent’s highest soccer honor. Spain and Argentina are the favorites, but you never know what will happen under the bright lights in one game. We’ve come a long way during this “summer of soccer” and now it’s time to enjoy the final matches.
MLB: Round one of the draft, Sunday @ 6 PM
The MLB Draft isn’t very exciting, as most of the players selected spend a few years in the minor leagues before you hear about them again. However, yours truly will be a guest on the Dealin’ the Cards podcast special draft-day livestream, talking about the St. Louis Cardinals and Wake Forest baseball. It’s a busy day of sports on Sunday, but I encourage you all to come check us out and talk some baseball!
