Spain makes a statement
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Tuesday, July 9.
SOCCER
Despite going down 1-0 early, Spain beat France to advance to the finals of the Euros. France will be disappointed in the result, but in a pattern that’s plagued them all tournament, Kylian Mbappe and Co. just couldn’t generate enough chances. On the other side, Spain has been the best team throughout the tournament, and will be the favorites going into the final. 16 year-old Lamine Yamal continues to be the best story of the Euros– before the match, French midfielder Adrian Rabiot said Yamal “had to do more” going forward… check out today’s play of the day for the response.
Canada fought hard and should be proud of their Copa America run, but Argentina was simply better in this semifinal matchup. Messi and the reigning World Cup champions won 2-0, playing the kind of confident, consistent game that shows Argentina’s championship pedigree. I wouldn’t bet against them in the finals this Sunday.
TENNIS
Four matches, four recaps. Let’s get to it:
Apologies to Daniil Medvedev, who was somehow overlooked in his quarterfinal matchup with Jannik Sinner. The Russian outlasted and out-dueled the number one seed, taking him down in five sets.
Medvedev’s reward? The defending champion, Carlos Alcaraz. Tommy Paul took the first set 7-5, but Alcaraz turned it up notch and steamrolled the American 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 to win the match.
On the women’s side, Donna Vekic ended the Cinderella run of qualifier Lulu Sun. Vekic is into her first Grand Slam semifinal.
Vekic will take on Jasmine Paolini, who absolutely dominated in her quarterfinal match against Emma Navarro. Paolini is the story of the summer in tennis, making the French Open final a few weeks ago and now displaying her versatility and all-court game on the grass.
MLB
All 30 teams were back in action Tuesday night. And boy, was there some action:
No one in baseball has enjoyed a better start to their career than Rece Hinds. The Cincinnati Reds outfielder went 3 for 5 with a double, triple, and home run last night. He’s the first baseball player in history to record five extra base hits in his first two games. With Hinds leading the way, the Reds beat the Rockies 12-6.
The top teams in the National League began a three game series last night, and the Phillies started it off with a bang. Trea Turner hit a grand slam and the Phillies smashed the Dodgers 10-1.
Every player on the Red Sox had a hit and scored a run before the end of the second inning! Boston starter Brayan Bello struck out 11, and the Red Sox beat the Athletics 12-9.
Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh did it all last night against the Padres. The switch-hitting Raleigh knocked out a two-run homer from each side of the plate, leading the Mariners to an 8-3 win.
Baseball is a game of fine margins… at one point just one strike away from winning the ballgame, the Toronto Blue Jays gave up a walk-off wild pitch against the San Francisco Giants. A tough night all-around for teams from Canada.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
In case you hadn’t heard, there will be an official college football video game for the first time in over ten years. After earlier reports that he would not be “in the game” in order to focus more on his real-life football, Texas backup QB Arch Manning has changed course. He teamed up with his uncle Eli to release this funny promo video. EA College Football comes out in less than ten days!
It was always sort of amusing when the Jaguars played the Bills, because you had the potential for Josh Allen to sack Josh Allen. Not anymore, as the Jaguars linebacker is changing his name to Josh Hines-Allen.
