Weekend recap/Paul George signs with 76ers
Good Morning! Today is Monday, July 1. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
For the first time ever, we have BREAKING NEWS after today’s Remix has been written and scheduled to send: Paul George has signed with the Philadelphia 76ers. George leaves the Los Angeles Clippers to start a new super-team, joining Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey in Philly.
MLB
All 30 teams played Friday, Saturday, and Sunday… that’s a total of 45 games! Here are the highlights and top performers:
The surprise of the season is Kansas City Royals starter Seth Lugo. The veteran journeyman recorded his league-leading 11th win on Sunday– Lugo also leads the big leagues in ERA and innings pitched.
No one likes grand slams as much as the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brew Crew have hit five of them in their last eight games and won two out of three games against the Chicago Cubs over the weekend.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is not the guy you want to pitch to right now. He’s 15 for his last 30 at the plate, including five home runs and 19 RBIs. Despite his strong weekend at the plate, Vladdy and the Blue Jays lost two out of three against the Yankees.
Max Scherzer moved into 11th place all-time for career strikeouts. He has a long way to go, but Paul Skenes might catch him one day. After another strong outing, Skenes continues his run as one of the most dominant rookie pitchers we’ve ever seen.
Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber were placed on the injured list, but Christopher Sanchez was a bright spot for the Phillies, pitching a complete game three-hit shutout against the Marlins.
In the final game of the weekend, Texas Rangers rookie Wyatt Langford hit for the cycle. Langford and the Rangers beat the Orioles 11-2 yesterday, but lost to Baltimore on Friday and Saturday. The Orioles became the third team in history to hit 60 home runs in a single month.
NBA
Free agency began yesterday, and major moves are already taking place:
Before Paul George shook up the NBA at 4 AM eastern, the Clippers had re-signed James Harden and picked up Derrick Jones Jr. on a nice deal. The loss of George is a tough break for LA, who gave up quite a haul for him just a few years ago.
Dejounte Murray has been traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. I think Murray will be a great fit in New Orleans, and they got him at a decent price. The Hawks, meanwhile, remain a very confusing team.
After being waived by the Golden State Warriors, Chris Paul has found a new home with the San Antonio Spurs. I cannot explain to you how excited I am for the Point God to teach, compete with, and throw lobs to Victor Wembanyama.
A few important role players found new homes yesterday. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has left Denver and signed a three-year deal with the Orlando Magic, veteran big man Andre Drummond is back with Philadelphia, and the Wizards added Jonas Valanciunas.
Finally, it’s the end of an era in Golden State. While not official, it’s been reported that Klay Thompson will not be re-signing with the Warriors. One of the greatest backcourts of all-time, the Splash Brothers are no longer. l’ll link some highlights so we can all remember the good times.
SOCCER
Four teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the Euros:
Switzerland knocked off defending champion Italy, highlighted by this superb goal. They take on England next, who escaped in overtime against Slovakia. Outside of one magical moment (the play of the year?) England still don’t look great.
Despite a long lightning delay, Germany took care of business against Denmark– although we’ll never know how this offsides and overturned goal might have changed things. Germany’s win sets up what many expect will be the match of the tournament against Spain, who overcame an early scare to beat Georgia 4-1.
The Copa America is nearing the start of the knockout round. Here’s the situation in each of the four groups:
Argentina won Group A, with Canada advancing in second place. Venezuela won Group B, and Ecuador’s dramatic 0-0 tie Sunday night pushed them through over Mexico.
Group C plays today, with Uruguay already through to the next round. The US and Panama are fighting for the last spot. Finally, barring any historical upsets, Columbia and Brazil are secure in advancing to the knockout stages from Group D. Brazil was dominant in their 4-1 win on Saturday, led by two beautiful goals from Vinicius Jr.
GOLF
Akshay Bhatia had a six-foot put to send the Rocket Mortgage Classic to a playoff… he couldn’t sink it, and Cam Davis walked away with the title. The name to remember, though, is Miles Russell. He’s just 15 years old, and has already made his pro debut.
NHL
NHL free agency kicks off today, but the weekend gave us a couple notable moments to kick off the offseason:
Beckett Sennecke was more surprised than anyone when the Anaheim Ducks selected him third overall. An all-time reaction– we’re all rooting for you now, Beckett!
Utah Hockey Club might sound sort of boring, but the newest team in pro hockey made headlines with a big trade. Utah acquired defensemen Mikhail Sergachev from the Tampa Bay Lightning. The deal made sense for UHC, as Sergachev immediately becomes their top defensemen. On the other side, the hockey world was left wondering what Tampa Bay’s next move would be after dumping Sergachev’s contract.
Well, the Lightning struck quickly– the Carolina Hurricanes dealt winger Jake Guentzel to Tampa Bay, who quickly reached an agreement with their new star forward.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Jamaica might have the new fastest man ever. Kishane Thompson ran a 9.77 100 meter dash, the fastest time in the world in two years. Thompson said he only tried for the first 60 meters.
The US Olympic trials have ended, and the stars are ready for Paris. Simone Biles leads the way in gymnastics– if you haven’t seen it yet, check out her gravity-defying floor routine. And a shoutout to my fellow St. Louisan and John Burroughs school alum Brandon Miller, who will be representing the US in the 800 meters.
In case you didn’t get enough NBA news, the Pistons have hired former Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff. Also, there’s going to be a new highest-selling Lakers jersey. Or at the very least, I am now interested in buying a Lakers jersey.
Major League Baseball has announced a new format for the Home Run Derby. It’s still the person who hits the most home runs wins. Gunnar Henderson of the Orioles is the first confirmed participant.
Finally, the Mets are officially the strangest franchise in sports. The winning streak is over, but the highlight of the weekend may have been shortstop Jose Iglesias performing his new song on the field after a game. The catchy tune is called “OMG”– OMG was the reaction of most fans, too.
TOP PLAYS OF THE WEEKEND
7: The MLS wants you to remember that there’s not just international soccer right now. Check out this strike from Jordi Alba.
6 & 5: The Angels came up with two web gems in an extra-innings win. First the pitcher made a play, then the catcher added one of his own.
4: Another fine catch from Major League Baseball. This one is courtesy of Brenton Doyle, who saved the game for the Colorado Rockies.
3: I love this goal so much– Atlanta scored the winning goal in legendary fashion.
2: Game-winning catches are always sure to get you on this list. Brendan Donovan leaps and snags this one at the wall to secure a win for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Hey Jude, don’t be afraid… you’re the NUMBER ONE play of the weekend:
95th minute, down by one… if England wins the Euros, this goal becomes an all-timer.
TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
COPA AMERICA: USA vs Uruguay, 9 PM on FS1
This is it for Team USA. You need a win to feel good about staying alive in the tournament. Keep one eye on how Panama fares against Bolivia, in a game that kicks off at the same time.
EUROS: France vs Belgium, Noon on FS1; Portugal vs Slovenia, 3 PM on Fox
A whole lot of star power takes the field today in Germany. France faces a tough test against a struggling Belgian side, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal are the favorites against Slovenia.
TENNIS: Wimbledon, beginning 6 AM on ESPN and ESPN+
As you read this, the grass court slam has already begun in London. On the men’s side, Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic are the favorites. On the women’s, the top two seeds in a wide-open draw are Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff. My picks to win? Number one seed Sinner and the resurgent Naomi Osaka.
