JuJu Watkins tears her ACL, will miss remainder of the tournament
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, March 24.
WOMEN’S MARCH MADNESS
This year’s tournament was altered drastically last night in Los Angeles when USC Trojans star and likely National Player of the Year JuJu Watkins went down in the first quarter holding her knee. USC advanced to the Sweet 16 thanks to an incredible team performance and season-high 36 points from Kiki Iriafen, but basketball fans held their breaths, awaiting news on what looked like a severe injury. Worst fears were confirmed late last night when it was reported by ESPN insider Shams Charania that Watkins tore her right ACL. She will miss the remainder of this season and likely most of next year. It’s a brutal blow for the top-seeded Trojans, for a true superstar in Watkins, and for fans of the game of basketball. Wishing JuJu all the best in her recovery.
Although a truly unfortunate injury hangs over the bracket, let’s take a look at the extremely intriguing final 16:
REGION ONE: (1) UCLA and Lauren Betts are the favorites against (5) Ole Miss, while (3) LSU takes on (2) NC State in a potential game of the tournament thus far.
REGION FOUR: The other group heading to Spokane for the weekend, (1) USC will face a resurgent (5) Kansas State team, led by the now healthy Ayoka Lee. K-State beat (4) Kentucky 80-79 in overtime on Sunday. The favorite in this region, however, has to be Paige Bueckers and (2) UConn. They’ll face a tough opponent in (3) Oklahoma.
REGION TWO: (1) South Carolina won 108-48 in round one… the defending champs match up against (4) Maryland in the Sweet 16. Maryland won an unbelievable double-overtime game last night against (5) Alabama. And rounding out the region, (3) North Carolina will play (2) Duke in a special edition of their storied rivalry.
REGION THREE: This region is anyone’s guess as to who makes the Final Four. (1) Texas has to deal with (5) Tennessee, who almost beat the Longhorns in January and have a win over South Carolina on their resume. The other side sees the most underseeded team in the tournament, (3) Notre Dame, take on Hailey Van Lith and (2) TCU. Appointment television for each these games in Birmingham!
BOOKER CALLS GAME
How about Devin Booker, reminding us that the pros have a little magic on the court this time of year, too:
COACHES ON THE MOVE
After leading Drake to a 31-win season and the round of 32, Ben McCollum has been hired as the new head coach at Iowa.
A week after losing to Xavier in the first four, Texas has reached an agreement with their head coach Sean Miller.
