JuJu Watkins takes over
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, February 13.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
There will be no undefeated season in college basketball! Number one UCLA went across town to take on (6) USC for a matchup between two of the top teams in the women’s game. And when the lights were brightest, the biggest star shined. JuJu Watkins absolutely dominated, leading the Trojans to a 71-60 upset victory. Watkins filled the entire stat sheet, with 38 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, and eight blocks. Not only did she lead her team in each category, no other USC player scored a basket from the field during the second and third quarters. When the other Trojans finally got involved on offense, the home team was able to pull away– USC outscored UCLA 24-8 in the fourth quarter. Overall, this was an extremely physical and well-played game between two very talented teams. Although I’d still argue that UCLA has the more well-rounded group, there’s no answer for a superstar when she takes over. Already looking forward to the rematch next month!
4 NATIONS
Credit to Finland, who scored the first goal and battled hard against the United States in their opening game last night. When the final horn sounded, however, the score was pretty lopsided. Brady and Matthew Tkachuck each scored two goals and America used a four-goal third period to crush their European opponents 6-1. All eyes shift to Saturday night, when the US takes on Canada: "I think it's going to be the biggest game that I've ever played in my career," Brady Tkachuk said. "We've been talking about that game especially. Really excited to experience it."
NBA
The last few games before all-star weekend in San Francisco:
Golden State rebounded after last night’s loss to defeat the Houston Rockets 105-98. All-star Steph Curry scored 27 points.
CJ McCollum dropped 43, leading the New Orleans Pelicans to a 140-133 overtime victory over the Sacramento Kings.
Despite a 40-point effort from all-star Tyler Herro, the Dallas Mavericks took down the Miami heat 118-113. Dante Exum led a short-handed Mavs squad with 27 points.
Norman Powell had 40 points last night, too. All-star James Harden added 32, and the Clippers beat the Utah Jazz 120-116 in overtime. Lots of overtime yesterday!
And in the matchup of the night, the Minnesota Timberwolves were victorious over the Oklahoma City Thunder. Naz Reid starred for the T-Wolves with 27 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists. Plus all-star Anthony Edwards added another poster to his highlight-reel, the exclamation point on Minnesota’s 116-101 win:
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
No big news today, sorry folks. However…
I’m truly honored to share this touching tribute from a storied franchise to their beloved quarterback. (Aaron Rodgers went 6-12 in two seasons in New York)
For everything you’ve given us the past two years, thank you 8 🤟
