It's Monday in May
Good Morning! Today is Monday, May 26. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
NBA
We’ll start with the series between the Thunder and Timberwolves, because there isn’t a whole lot to cover from this past weekend. With their backs up against the wall, Minnesota absolutely dominated game three at home on Saturday, beating OKC by 42 points. Reserve guard Terrance Shannon finished with more points than any of the Thunder starters! You knew Anthony Edwards (30 points) and the T-Wolves wouldn’t go down without a fight, but this was a blowout. The real test of this series will be tonight in game four…
Indiana and New York gave us two wild games this weekend. On Friday, the Pacers won yet another game at Madison Square Garden, thanks to an impressive 39-point game by the underrated Pascal Siakam. Facing enormous pressure as they went on the road, the Knicks moved Mitchell Robinson into the starting lineup and tried to switch things up. It didn’t work, as they trailed Indy by 20 points in the second quarter and 16 midway through the third. But then something clicked. Karl Anthony-Towns scored 20 points in the fourth and New York roared back to take game three 106-100. Indiana is now 0-4 all-time when hosting a game on the same day as the Indy 500 race, so maybe that was the reason for the loss? In any case, this series is full of surprises. Clear your schedule for game four on Tuesday.
NHL
The Florida Panthers are absolutely crushing the Carolina Hurricanes. They won game three 6-2 and can sweep the Canes tonight to end the series. The craziest stat of all? Since winning the Stanley Cup in 2006, Carolina is 0-15 in the conference finals! They were swept in 2009, 2019, and 2023. Florida might be really good, but that’s a pretty awful track record for Carolina.
Dallas made NHL history with first ever all-Finnish starting five skaters on Friday night. Unfortunately for the Stars, they were outscored 9-1 in their two games this weekend against the Edmonton Oilers. Connor McDavid and his team are simply too good right now, and there’s nothing stopping them. The Oilers now hold a 2-1 series lead, as we get closer and closer to a 2024 Stanley Cup rematch.
MLB
The stars were out this weekend in Major League Baseball! It’s a team game, but this morning I’m going to tell you about four individuals who showed up big time the last few days:
First there was Ronald Acuña Jr., making his return after a year away from the game due to an ACL injury. The 2023 NL MVP hit lead off on Friday for the Braves… and crushed a home run on the very first pitch he saw. So yeah, safe to say Acuña is back!
Shohei Ohtani hit a lead-off home run of his own yesterday when the Dodgers took on the Mets. More exciting, however, was what Ohtani did pregame. For the first time this season, the reigning MVP pitched a live batting practice. Get excited baseball fans! It was reported that Ohtani’s fastball reached 97 MPH…
Statcast was introduced in 2015. It’s a technology that tracks everything in baseball, from sprint speed to spin rate to catch probability. Yesterday, Pirates outfielder Oneil Cruz hit the hardest ball ever registered in the Statcast era. His home run left the park at 122.9 MPH!
Finally, it feels like a weekly occurrence that the Remix is highlighting the exploits of Tarik Skubal. The Tigers ace and 2024 AL Cy Young outdid himself again yesterday, pitching a complete-game shutout with 13 strikeouts! Oh, and his final pitch of the game was the fastest one he’s ever thrown…
Tarik Skubal racked up 13 strikeouts in his first career complete game 👏
He hit 102.6 MPH on the radar on his last pitch! The fastest of the day and his career 😤

NOTEWORTHY NEWS
It’s not often that you learn about a new rule in sports, but here’s one from Saturday’s Mets-Dodgers game: a baserunner tagging up from a base is allowed to leave as soon as “touch” is established, and does not have to wait for a fielder to catch the ball. This must be the answer to why outfielders don’t bobble a pop-fly all the way to home plate in order to prevent a run. You can see the example here at this link. The more you know!
Novak Djokovic won his 100th career singles title on Saturday, taking home the trophy in Geneva. He joins two others as the only men to reach the century mark– can you name them? Answer at the bottom
And in more tennis news, the first day of the French Open was highlighted by an incredible ceremony to honor the red clay’s greatest champion. Center court at Roland Garros was packed like a final as the historic tournament recognized Rafael Nadal. There were videos and speeches and lots of tears, but I think this little moment backstage with Rafa’s son was my favorite part:
