I don't think we believe in Kansas anymore...

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Tuesday, February 18.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

And so begins the slowest three weeks of the sports calendar. The NBA and NHL playoffs aren’t quite here yet, spring training is just beginning, and college basketball is the only sport truly peaking. Lucky for us, this college basketball season has been pretty entertaining. Let’s get to last night’s action:

  • Bill Self has coached at Kansas since 2003. Last night’s 34-point loss to unranked BYU tied for the worst margin of defeat in Self’s entire tenure. The (23) Jayhawks were flat, lifeless, and uninspiring against the Cougars. Richie Saunders led the way for the victors with 22 points.

  • On the other hand, (11) Wisconsin looked pretty great. The Badgers put up 90 points for the second consecutive game, defeating Illinois 95-74. Elsewhere in the Big 10, (13) Purdue lost their second game in a row, falling at (14) Michigan State 75-66. And Minnesota pulled off a major upset at UCLA, as Dawson Garcia scored 27 points in the second half to stun the Bruins at home.

  • (21) Mississippi State scored a major win over (7) Texas A&M, defeating the Aggies 70-54. Josh Hubbard scored 25 points and the home team used a strong second half to secure the win.

  • One last upset of the evening– TCU shocked (9) Texas Tech 69-66. It’s been a rough year for the Horned Frogs, but the fans were happy to storm the court after beating a rival.

GOLF

The TGL hasn’t been too exciting, but it does provide some good highlights. Check out this pretty funny mistake by Tiger Woods–

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

The days of Vladdy Guerrero Jr. on the Toronto Blue Jays may be over soon. The star first baseman was unable to reach a contract extension with the team this offseason, and will reach free agency next winter. "Listen, I want to be here. I want to be a Blue Jay for the rest of my career," Guerrero said. "But it's free agency. It's business. So I'm going to have to listen to 29 more teams and they're going to have to compete for that." Keep an eye on the Blue Jays these first few months– if they start slowly, Vladdy could be traded to a contender.

Joe Buck is back in the baseball broadcast booth! The voice of Monday Night Football will make his return to the sport he grew up on, calling the Opening Day game between the Yankees and Brewers on ESPN. It will be Buck’s first national broadcast of Major League Baseball since 2021, although he did work one St. Louis Cardinals game last season.
