Holy Haliburton they did it again
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, June 5.
NBA FINALS
The Oklahoma City Thunder led game one of the NBA Finals for 46 minutes and 26 seconds. Indiana tied the game at 10, and that was the final time this matchup was all square. At one point OKC led by 15, and they still were up five with 90 seconds remaining. But pro basketball is a 48-minute game, and Indiana had more points for the 0.3 seconds that mattered the most:
He did it again! Simply incredible from the Pacers point guard. A couple of thoughts on a thrilling start to the Finals:
The Pacers turned the ball over 19 times in the first half! It was a pretty bad start for the underdogs. “When you turn the ball over that much, you expect to be down 20-plus,” said Pascal Siakam. In the second half, Indiana gave up the ball just five times.
OKC’s stars have to be more efficient. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was 14-30 from the field, Jalen Williams shot 6-19, and Chet Holmgren really struggled, ending the game 2-9.
All of a sudden, I’m not sure what to make of this series. On one hand, nothing has changed. The Thunder are still the favorites, and it took a massive comeback and an off-night on offense to beat them by one point. However, we’ve now seen a clear blueprint for Indy to win this series. They can use Siakam’s size as mismatch and throw versatile defenders like Andrew Nembhard and Aaron Nesmith at SGA. And when the Pacers take care of the ball and shoot well from three, they’re a really tough team to beat. Not to forget about Tyrese Haliburton, who even after a rough night shooting (6-13, 14 points) came up clutch... again. I’ve said “again” like ten times, but what else is there to say? He’s been remarkable. All that being said, we’ve got a couple days until game two. I know the coaches of each team are already making adjustments.
FRENCH OPEN
Aryna Sabalenka vs Iga Swiatek was the matchup we’ve all been waiting for. The three-time defending champ against the number one player in the world, with a spot in the finals on the line. A great battle between these two intense competitors, however, will be remembered for the ending. After splitting the first two sets, Sabalenka pounced on Swiatek and took the deciding third 6-0. "She's the toughest opponent, especially on the clay, especially at Roland Garros. I'm proud that I was able to get this win… I mean, 6-love? It could not be more perfect than that. I'm super proud right now,” said Sabalenka afterwards. The three-time major champion will appear in her first French Open final on Saturday, and after a flawless set against the defending champ, she’ll be the favorite.
In the other semi, it was the end of the line for hometown favorite Lois Boisson. Despite support from a raucous crowd, the French wildcard was taken down fairly quickly by the number two seed, Coco Gauff. Outside of Sabalenka, you could make the case that no one on tour is playing better tennis right now than the young American. She made the finals in Madrid and Rome in the last month, and has found ways to beat her opponents in a variety of ways. Coco will play in her second Roland Garros final this weekend with all the confidence in the world.
MLB
We’re just going to focus on one game from yesterday… I think you’ll see why:
Atlanta led Arizona 10-4 in the ninth inning… Ronald Acuña hit a home run, as did rookie catcher Drake Baldwin. Things were good. It was a comfortable lead. But it’s never a good sign when a reliever named “Blewett” enters to close things out. Would you believe it, Atlanta gave up seven runs and lost 11-10. “If you were looking for a rock bottom, this might be it,” said Braves broadcaster and Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Glavine. The season has been so frustrating for Atlanta and this loss was so embarrassing that the Braves made the decision to call up Craig Kimbrel. A future Hall of Famer, the 37-year-old Kimbrel was the closer for some great Braves teams back in the early 2010s. He was also one of the worst pitchers in baseball last season. Maybe Kimbrel will bring good vibes and rediscover some magic? At this point, it appears Atlanta will try anything.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
It finally happened– Aaron Rodgers signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. What took so long? We’ll probably never know. Will the decision to sign a mercurial 41-year-old quarterback be a good one? We’ll know that soon enough…
Congratulations to Manny Machado, who became the fifth active player with 350 career home runs. He’s just the 10th primary third baseman in MLB history to reach the milestone.
