Hole-in-ones for everyone!
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, January 30.
NHL
As I prepared for this morning’s Remix, I was struck by how many notable scores and performances there were last night in the NHL. Here’s a quick snapshot of each of them:
Three games went to overtime: the Blue Jackets beat the Golden Knights 2-1 in OT, the Red Wings beat the Oilers 3-2 in a shootout, and despite Alexander Ovechkin’s goal (just 19 away from the record!) the Washington Capitals fell 5-4 to the Ottawa Senators in the extra frame.
Matt Coronato scored a hat trick and the Calgary Flames beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-1.
Mikko Rantanen scored his first goal as a Carolina Hurricane, leading his team to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.
Beloved goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury played his final NHL game in his home province of Montreal. Just watch how his peers and the home crowd celebrated him– it’s one of those touching sports moments that couldn’t be sweeter if you tried to script it:
Marc-Andre Fleury shuts out the Canadiens in his final start in his home province 👏
All Habs players and coaches stayed out to give Flower their respect.

NBA
Time for five games, five sentences:
LeBron and the Lakers were beating the Washington Wizards by so much that Bronny played the entire fourth quarter.
Cleveland cruised to another victory, beating Atlanta 137-115.
Anthony Edwards dropped 36 points as the Timberwolves took down the Utah Jazz 138-113.
Jaren Jackson Jr. made the winning free throws with 8.6 seconds remaining and Memphis squeaked by Houston 120-119.
The Portland Trail Blazers won their sixth game of their last seven, defeating the Orlando Magic 119-90.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
‘Twas not a good night to be a ranked team in action in the men’s game…
Nebraska took down (18) Illinois 80-74 in overtime. Brice Williams scored eight points in OT to secure the win for the Cornhuskers.
UCLA crushed (16) Oregon 78-52 in Los Angeles. After a brief stumble, the Bruins are back on track in the Big 10.
But one player in particular dominated the basketball landscape last night. Vanderbilt freshman Mikayla Blakes set an NCAA D-I record for a true freshman, scoring 53 points in one game. It was an unbelievable performance by Blakes, who led Vandy to a 99-86 win over Florida.
GOLF
Rory McIlroy, take it away:
How about that! Way to go Rory, that’s a shot-of-the-year candidate before the end of January. Now wait, hold on a second… I’m getting a notification here… it’s Shane Lowry!
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
The NBA all-star teams are set, with 14 reserves now joining the 10 starters named a week ago. It’s a group well-deserving players, with little argument that anyone didn’t deserve to make the team. Six players made the first all-star team, inlcuding Victor Wembanyama. But as always, there were a few notable snubs.
Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker is facing allegations by multiple women that he engaged in inappropriate conduct during massage sessions. You can read more about the situation and view Tucker’s statement denying the allegations here.
NBA veteran Terry Rozier is under federal investigation for an illegal gambling scheme, relating to a game he played while a member of the Charlotte Hornets in 2023. You can read more about the investigation here.
Moving on… the Seattle Mariners re-signed third baseman Jorge Polanco, but the big news in Major League Baseball comes from up north. Future hall of famer Max Scherzer has signed a one-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. Now 40 years old, Scherzer will attempt to add another memorable stop to his legendary career.
