Historical night for NBA superstars

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, November 13.

NBA

One team continues to dominate the NBA, but the story of the night has to be the performances of three generational basketball talents:

  • The team, of course, is the Cleveland Cavaliers. Donovan Mitchell had 23 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists as the Cavs stayed undefeated on the season; they beat the Philadelphia 76ers 114-106. Cleveland is the sixth 13-0 team in NBA history. 76ers rookie Jared McCain had a fantastic performance despite the result, with 34 points and 10 assists.

  • We’ll highlight our trio of stars in order of ascending age. First up– Victor Wembanyama. Wemby dropped his first career 50 point game, knocking down a career-high eight 3-pointers. He’s the fourth-youngest player of all-time to score 50 points in a game. Wemby and the Spurs beat the Washington Wizards 139-130.

  • Next up, we have a special evening from Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Bucks superstar scored 59 points in an overtime win over the Pistons. It’s the highest scoring game by any player in the league this season. Giannis accounted for almost half of Milwaukee’s 127 points!

  • And finally, we end our recap with The King. At 39 years of age, LeBron James recorded his third consecutive game with a triple-double. This time, LeBron went for 35 points, 12 rebounds, and 14 assists. There are no words left to describe how incredible LeBron is at the game of basketball, or his unique longevity as one of the top players in the sport. Rookie Dalton Knecht (who was two years old when LeBron was drafted!) went 7-8 from the field and scored 19 points, as the Lakers won a close game against the Memphis Grizzlies 128-123.

NHL

A couple of stellar games took place last night on the ice:

  • Detroit headed to overtime tied 2-2 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. It didn’t take long for the game to end in the extra period– Simon Edvinsson scored the winning goal just over a minute into OT and the Red Wings beat the Penguins 3-2.

  • We had another overtime game take place in Washington. The visiting Maple Leafs came back from a 3-1 third period deficit to send the game to overtime, before John Tavares knocked in the winning goal. Toronto beat the Capitals 4-3.

  • The performance of the night came out west. Mikko Rantanen scored a hat trick and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Los Angeles Kings 4-2.

“How do I describe the win? It’s a good win. I don’t know how you describe a win. It’s better than a loss. I’m not trying to be flip or anything, I just don’t know how you describe wins.” –Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, in 2015… we’re sending out best to Pop as he recovers from a mild stroke. One of the all-time greats.
