Historic Haliburton

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Tuesday. May 27.

NBA

Tyrese Haliburton’s father was banned from NBA playoff games after confronting Giannis Antetokounmpo at the end of round one. That ban ended last night and it could not have been better timing for the Pacers star point guard…

  • Haliburton became the first player in NBA postseason history with 32 points, 15 assists, 12 rebounds, and zero turnovers. That’s a triple-double with no mistakes! Nikola Jokic and Oscar Robertson are the only other people to put up 30/15/10 in the playoffs. So yeah, Haliburton was pretty unbelievable.

  • Indiana needed every ounce of that perfect performance because the Knicks came to play. Jalen Brunson scored 31 and both Karl-Anthony Towns and OB Anunoby scored over 20. But Indy got out to an early lead and never surrendered. It’s the first time the home team has won a game all series.

  • Tyrese Haliburton had some help, too– Pascal Siakam dropped 30 points and Benedict Mathurin added 20 off the bench as Indiana gutted out a 130-121 victory. They’re now just one game away from the NBA Finals.

NHL

Since blowing a lead in game one, the Edmonton Oilers have put the pedal to the metal in the Western Conference Finals. They continued their dominant series with a 4-1 victory last night over the Dallas Stars. Leon Draisaitl and Corey Perry scored on the power-play before two empty-net goals sealed the deal at the end of the game. As great as the Oilers are in the offensive zone, let’s take a moment to recognize the play of goaltender Stuart Skinner. After 28 more saves tonight, Skinner has allowed just two goals in the last three games– all victories for his team. With a confident offense and a shutdown goalie, it appears Edmonton has all the right pieces to make a run at the Stanley Cup.

MLB

What a beautiful day of baseball! Let’s get to some recaps:

TENNIS

The French Open first round is officially over, and while there have been plenty of upsets and magnificent performances on the red clay throughout the first few days, it was the very last match that demanded coverage in the Remix. Gael Monfils, the 38-year-old Frenchman, was scheduled as the primetime matchup on center court in Paris last night. That’s a pretty incredible honor for an unseeded player, but that’s what a world-class performer and beloved entertainer such as Monfils deserves. After crashing into the side wall and falling down two sets to none against Hugo Dellien, however, it looked like Le Monf was going to end his tournament early. But after almost four grueling hours of exquisite shotmaking, Monfils delivered. I’ll leave it at this: if you have a lunch break today and need something to watch for 10 minutes, the following highlight reel will not disappoint…

“They talked about -- I'll call it a 5+11 model -- and our own ability to earn those berths... At the coaching level, the question is, why wouldn't that be fine? Why wouldn't we do that? We talked about 16 with them. So, good conversation, not a destination, but the first time I've had the ability to go really in depth with ideas with them," –SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, as the powers that be prepare their next attempt to maximize the earning power of college football… the 5+11 model is five conference champions and 11 at-large teams
