Hey now, you're an all-star
Good Morning! Today is Monday, July 7. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
MLB
Zack Wheeler was historically dominant yesterday and the Blue Jays may have forgotten how to lose, but it’s important to remember that baseball can be a cruel, cruel game. Especially if you’re a fan of one of these three teams:
The St. Louis Cardinals gave up 28 runs at Wrigley Field over the weekend, dropping two of three against the Chicago Cubs. Michael Busch hit four homers for the home team, including three on the Fourth of July.
New York snapped their losing streak with a 6-4 victory over the Mets yesterday, but the Yankees are 3-7 in their last ten games. Nothing sums up the feeling in the Bronx right now as much as this bizarre occurrence from Saturday, when shortstop Anthony Volpe accidentally hit teammate Aaron Judge in the face with an errant warm up throw.
But no one is struggling right now like the Cleveland Guardians. Just one strike away from a win yesterday, a wild pitch scored the tying run for Detroit and the Tigers won in extra innings. Cleveland has now lost 10 games in a row.
SOCCER
Mexico came back from an early 1-0 deficit to win the Gold Cup over the US yesterday in Houston. This set-piece winner (below) in the 76th minute was the winner– although the game was not without controversy, as US head coach Mauricio Pochettino emphasized after the game. This was the last big event before next summer’s World Cup… the pressure is officially on for Team USA.
TENNIS
A full quarterfinal breakdown will be in your inbox tomorrow morning, following today’s round of 16 matches. But this past weekend at Wimbledon had a bit of everything… we’ve got the oldest first-time quarterfinalist in history, Ben Shelton calling out Morgan Stanley to get his sister out of work, and some all-time shot-making by the greatest talents in the game. Buckle up for a thrilling final week!
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Just one week before they have the first overall pick in the draft, the Washington Nationals have fired head coach Dave Martinez and general manager Mike Rizzo. Again, that is a massive organizational shakeup just one week before arguably the biggest day of the season for a rebuilding team. To quote Dodgeball, “It’s a bold strategy Cotton, let’s see if it pays off for ‘em.”
Two separate leagues announced their all-star game reserves! First, the WNBA released their complete all-star game roster, with the bench group including Washington rookies Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen.
Major League Baseball announced their all-star game reserves and pitchers last night on ESPN, including the commissioner’s special selection of Clayton Kershaw as a legacy honoree. The biggest news may have actually been what they didn’t announce– for the first time in in five seasons, Pete Alonso will not participate in the Home Run Derby. As for the all-star snubs, the experts at the Athletic have you covered. I’ll highlight Julio Rodriguez, who I guess has good defensive metrics, and Jazz Chisholm– Yankees boost!– as questionable choices in the American League. I would have picked Junior Caminero or Maikel Garcia and either George Springer or Jo Adell. It’s hard to say who didn’t deserve a spot in the National League, but Trea Turner should 100% be in Atlanta next week. Juan Soto and Seiya Suzuki had good cases to make the team as well. No matter what, it should be a great celebration of the game!
And finally, two basketball notes… Chris Paul hinted that this would be his final year in the NBA. Still a free agent, let’s hope the Point God gets a goodbye worthy of his incredible career. And a new record has been set! The Kevin Durant trade has been reworked as a seven-team extravaganza. There’s no new players or picks changing hands, just some GMs squeezing a bunch of deals into one for some reason. I think next season they should go for eight.
