Hail Marys, Hook 'n Ladders, and a weekend full of comebacks
Good Morning! Today is Monday, September 23rd. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
NFL
Another Sunday, another slate of entertaining NFL games. Time for another edition of The Remix Six (name still pending):
No one was expecting much from Carolina after they benched struggling quarterback Bryce Young this week. We all owe Panthers fans an apology. Andy Dalton turned back the clock and lit up the scoreboard in a 36-22 win over the Raiders.
Saquan Barkley scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns and the Eagles were on the right side of the close game this week, as Philly beat New Orleans 15-12. It’s the first time this year anyone has slowed down the Saints offense.
The Lions-Cardinals game may not have been the most exciting game from start-to-finish (Detroit won 20-13) but I guarantee this is one of the best plays you’ll see all season. Why don’t more teams try the hook and ladder?
Late in the afternoon in Dallas, Baltimore was up 28-6 in the fourth quarter. Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry had run wild and nothing had gone right for Dak and the Dallas offense. But with Tom Brady in the broadcast booth, no lead is safe. The Cowboys came all the way back to within three points, before running out of time and falling to the Ravens 28-25.
I did a double-take when I saw the final score of the Rams-49ers game. San Francisco wide receiver Juan Jennings stepped up in place of the many injured 49ers, making highlight grabs and scoring three touchdowns. Behind Jennings and his strong start, San Fran held a ten point lead midway through the fourth quarter. But Rams running back Kyren Williams flipped the script (literally) and LA stormed back, winning 37-24 on a field goal in the final seconds. You can watch the action-packed final three minutes here.
The final game of the night was one of the best. Once again, Kansas City found themselves holding onto a late lead. And once again, Kirk Cousins the Falcons needed to score a touchdown with under a minute to go. It was the Chiefs defense who won the final battle, as the defending champs move to 3-0 to start the season, winning a well-played game 22-17. I’m going to take a risk here and say this matchup might be played again in New Orleans in February.
NCAA
College football has been really entertaining this year. In case you missed this past Saturday, here’s what happened:
(24) Illinois came up with just enough big plays to take down (22) Nebraska in overtime. This game on Friday night in Lincoln was a thriller from start to finish– even as Nebraska faced a 3rd and 42 in overtime.
(18) Michigan responded well after a slow start to the year, beating (11) USC 27-24 on a fourth down touchdown run with 37 seconds remaining. Welcome to the Big 10, Trojans.
(12) Utah handled their business in a win on the road against (14) Oklahoma State. The Utes are 4-0, even with QB Cam Rising out injured.
(6) Tennessee officially looks like one of the best teams in the country, as the Vols controlled the whole game in their win at (15) Oklahoma.
Finally, the upset of the weekend belonged to BYU. The Cougars stomped (13) Kansas State 38-9… no play sums up the victory quite like this punt return:

THREE STARS:
Teams playing against North Carolina schools: UNC was demolished 70-50 by James Madison and NC State was run off the field in a 59-35 loss to Clemson. Charlotte got rocked 52-14 by Indiana and App State was embarrassed 48-14 against South Alabama. I guess it was a good thing for Wake Forest and Duke to be on byes…
College kickers: First, we had Temple’s kicker Maddux Trujillo kick a 64-yarder that broke a record in Philadelphia. Later in the evening, Vanderbilt’s kicker missed a short field goal in double-overtime in a bid to upset top-ranked Mizzou. Highs and lows, highs and lows.
Travis Hunter: Shedeur Sanders and the Colorado offense scored on a hail mary as time expired to send their game against Baylor into overtime. And then when it was time for someone to step up and win the game, Hunter showed yet again why he is one of the best football players in the country:

MLB
The weekend was dominated by the action on the gridiron, but plenty of notable events occurred on the baseball field, too:
The Athletics played their last ever game in Oakland yesterday: it was an unceremonious 7-4 defeat against the Yankees. Now, the once-storied franchise goes on the road, stopping in Sacramento for the foreseeable future until their stadium is built in Las Vegas.
It’s official– the Chicago White Sox have tied the 1962 Mets with 120 losses in one season. In order to avoid setting the record, the White Sox need to win each of their final six games. Might be a tough task for a team that has won just 12 times since the beginning of July.
Congratulations to Padres starter Yu Darvish! Darvish is the first Japanese pitcher to strike out 2,000 batters in Major League Baseball.
Two awesome endings to games last night. First, Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts hit back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning to beat the Rockies 6-5. Then, Mets closer Edwin Diaz recorded a rare six-out save, as the Mets took down the Phillies and held on to their lead over Atlanta in the NL wild card race.
No one is having more fun right now than Tigers fans. Just look at this incredible game-saving catch from Saturday night. It’s another great moment on an unbelievable second-half surge in Detroit:
WNBA
On Friday, A’ja Wilson was named the second-ever unanimous WNBA MVP, while Caitlin Clark was voted the unanimous the Rookie of the Year award on Saturday. After that, it was all business as the playoffs began yesterday afternoon. Each of the higher seeds were victorious in game one– The Remix will be back with updates if there is any drama as the first round progresses.
SOCCER
Would you believe it? It was a busy weekend for soccer, too. However, two moments stood out from the rest:
Manchester City shocked Arsenal with a goal in the 98th minute to tie their title challengers 2-2. City remains top of the table in the Premier League, and have yet to lose a game this year.
Christian Pulisic scored a beauty for AC Milan against rivals Inter Milan. The American’s goal proved to be the difference in a 2-1 victory.
And if you want to watch more Americans play soccer, check out the MLS. You’ll get to see moments like this:

NOTEWORTHY NEWS
All-star CJ Abrams was shockingly sent down to the minor leagues by the Washington Nationals on Friday. The demotion of Abrams was not due to his performance, but because the young shortstop pulled an all-nighter at a casino in Chicago before a day game. You could say his gamble did not pay off.
The younger brother of Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola has announced his commitment to join the Cornhuskers. Dayton is also a quarterback, and is part of the class of 2026.
With a week left in the season, the Cincinnati Reds have fired manager David Bell. The young Reds team underperformed a bit this year, but it was a surprise to see a change of leadership occur at this time.
