Grandpa's playing quarterback
Good Morning! Today is Thursday, December 10. Here’s what happened this week in the world of sports.
NBA
Remember the NBA Cup? The midseason tournament that’s played on the crazy-colored courts? We’re down to the final four in Vegas:
In the East, the Magic will take on the Knicks. Two of the top four teams in the conference, Orlando beat Miami 117-108 in the quarters, while New York defeated Toronto 117-101.
Out West, the Thunder are tied with the 2015 Warriors for the best start in NBA history. OKC destroyed Phoenix 138-89 last night, securing their semifinal spot and improving to 24-1 on the season. They’ll take on the Spurs, who have continued to win even without the injured Victor Wembanyama. San Antonio beat the Lakers 132-119 last night in LA.
NHL
The hockey world continues to focus on the upcoming Winter Olympics in Italy. However, the action this week has been pretty spectacular–
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT…
The Philadelphia Eagles don’t look very good. They lost to an injured Chargers team in overtime on Monday night in an exciting but often ugly game. All that being said, this is one those plays you have to see to believe:
MLB WINTER MEETINGS
It’s heating up! Here’s a look at the notable happenings around Major League Baseball this week (sorry Mets fans):
Kyle Schwarber has re-signed with the Phillies for five years. Philly fought off a slew of other interested teams to retain their superstar DH.
The Los Angeles Dodgers had one weakness during their run to a second-straight World Series: the bullpen. Well, LA went out and signed one of the best closers in baseball, agreeing to a three-year deal with former Mets closer Edwin Diaz. Get ready to hear those trumpets at Dodger Stadium!
And the Orioles swooped in yesterday for the Polar Bear, Pete Alonso. The slugging first baseman will leave the Mets for the first time in his career after signing a five-year deal with Baltimore.
Finally, congratulations to the Chicago White Sox on winning the Draft Lottery and receiving the first overall pick in 2026. Roch Cholowsky, a shortstop at UCLA, is currently ranked the top prospect.
NEWSWORTHY
Daniel Jones, starting QB for the Colts, is out for the season after tearing his Achilles last weekend. His backup, Anthony Richardson, has been out all year due to a pregame mishap with an exercise band. The third-string QB Riley Leonard sprained his knee on Sunday and will likely miss some time, too. Meanwhile, 44-year-old Philip Rivers is the coach of a high school football team in Alabama. He’s got nine kids and a grandson, enjoying his life after retiring from the NFL in January of 2021. Well, now Philip Rivers is back on the Colts and likely starting this Sunday against Seattle. Indianapolis is desperate, so they turned to the former Pro-Bowler that knows the offense as well as anyone. I honestly have no idea how this will turn out… but you can bet that I’ll be watching.
The University of Michigan fired head football coach Sherrone Moore yesterday, citing an "inappropriate relationship with a staff member." Later in the day, it was reported that Moore had been taken into custody due to an alleged assault. A sudden and surprising series of events.
Shoutout to the University of Nebraska, currently undefeated in women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball. That’s dominance.
And then there were four… the finalists for this year’s Heisman trophy are Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza, Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love, Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia, and Ohio State QB Julian Sayin.
Audi Crooks might be the best basketball player you don’t know about. The junior at Iowa State is averaging a point per minute– only one player in the history of D1 basketball, the NBA, or the WNBA has ever accomplished this over the course of a season (Joel Embiid of the 76ers).
Last but certainly not least, congratulations to Joe Buck, winner of the 2025 Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in broadcasting by the Baseball Hall of Fame. While he no longer calls baseball games, Buck is the sixth broadcaster to win the Frick Award and the football-equivalent named for Pete Rozelle. He joins his father, Jack, as one of those six. The 50th recipient of this honor all-time, the Bucks are the first father-son broadcasting duo to enter the Baseball Hall of Fame.
