Gold Rush Weekend
Good Morning! Today is Monday, August 5th. Here’s what happened in the world of sports over the weekend.
OLYMPICS
I think this screenshot from Peacock’s GoldZone explains how hectic this weekend was in Paris:

Without further ado, let’s get to some highlights– emphasis on some, because this weekend had a lot going on:
Team USA:
More medals in gymnastics! Stephen “Pommel Horse Guy” Nedoroscik did his thing and took home bronze. On the women’s side, Simone Biles continued to dominate with a gold in the vault, while fellow American Jade Carey won bronze.
Just one American man won an individual gold in the pool in Paris. That man would be Bobby Finke, who set a world record as he finished first in the 1500 meter freestyle.
There are no superlatives left to describe Katie Ledecky, who won her fourth straight gold in the 800 meter freestyle. Sunday also marked the last day of swimming– look at all those medals! (if you feel like you’re missing the thrill of the pool, check out the NBC Sports YouTube to watch highlights of the best races)
Surprise, surprise, Scottie Scheffler won a golf tournament. An emotional Scheffler shot his best back nine of the year on Sunday, and managed to win gold ahead of a stacked leaderboard.
Kristen Faulkner went to Harvard for rowing, but she just won a gold medal in cycling! The Alaskan native had an incredible race and came out of nowhere to win the road race. She’s the first American to medal in the event in 40 years.
On the Track and in the Field:
Grant Fisher earned every piece of his bronze medal in the 10,000 meters. A fantastic finish in this race kicked off an exciting set of track and field events.
Ryan Crouser won his third straight gold medal in shot put. American went gold-silver for the third Olympics in a row, as Joe Kovacs finished second to the greatest shot-putter of all-time.
The US 4×400 mixed relay team set a world record in qualifying, but took home silver in the final race. Impressive stuff from the Netherlands, who chased down the Americans on the final leg.
Last but not least, Noah Lyles is the fastest man on earth. He took home the gold medal in the 100 meters by the smallest of margins.
Around the world:
Leon Marchand is basically the king of France. The young swimmer finished his Olympics with four golds and one bronze. Marchand joins Mark Spitz and Michael Phelps as the only swimmers to win more than three individual golds at a single Olympics.
Novak Djokovic won one of the best tennis matches of the year, taking down Carlos Alcaraz 7-6, 7-6 to win a gold medal. Djokovic is just the fifth tennis player to complete the Golden Slam.
The best athlete you’ve never heard of is Teddy Riner. The French judoka is a legend in his home country, and is now the first in his sport to win four gold medals. You have to see how the “randomizer” picked Riner’s weight class as the tiebreaking duel when France won the mixed team event.
Lastly, a few quick hitters: Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh won three gold medals, the Philippines took home their first ever men’s gymnastics gold medal, and Snoop Dogg is wildly entertaining.
MEDAL COUNT (TOP 10)
COUNTRY | GOLD | SILVER | BRONZE | TOTAL |
---|---|---|---|---|
USA | 19 | 26 | 26 | 71 |
China | 19 | 15 | 11 | 45 |
France | 12 | 14 | 18 | 44 |
Great Britain | 10 | 12 | 15 | 37 |
Australia | 12 | 11 | 8 | 31 |
South Korea | 10 | 7 | 7 | 24 |
Japan | 9 | 5 | 10 | 24 |
Italy | 7 | 10 | 5 | 22 |
Canada | 5 | 4 | 8 | 17 |
Netherlands | 6 | 5 | 4 | 15 |
BASEBALL
Major League Baseball is a bit overshadowed right now, as 51 gold medals tend to steal a bit of the spotlight. There were still a few notable moments from the weekend:
Are the New York Yankees a good team? It doesn’t really matter, because Aaron Judge hit his league-leading 41st home run.
Speaking of great players, Shohei Ohtani became the first member of the 30-30 club in 2024. That’s 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases. Don’t forget, this guy is going to start pitching again next year.
Talk about burying the lead… Blake Snell threw a no-hitter! The Giants ace has longed faced questions over his ability to pitch deep into games. It’s time to put those questions to rest, as Snell made history with his performance Friday night.
And finally, I have to acknowledge this insane insane first inning for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Corbin Carroll led off with a triple-turned-inside-the-park-home-run. That’s already unusual. Then, the next three batters hit home runs, too! After that start, you would be correct to assume that the D-Backs won the game.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
After winning the national championship, Jim Harbaugh left his position as head coach of the Michigan football team for the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL. Now, just a few months later, new head coach Sherrone Moore and the team are facing all sorts of sanctions and penalties for covering up the Connor Stallions spying-on-teams scandal. Michigan’s fight song “Hail to the Victors” sounds a bit different all of a sudden.
This week in “stories that shouldn’t be stories” we have the NFL player’s top 100 vote. Somehow, the guys who play the game put Patrick Mahomes fourth. Did the MVP really need more motivation to win another Super Bowl. On a much more important note, the NFL enshrined seven new members into the hall of fame.
For years, the Big 10 conference has proudly used a fun map animation to promote their schools. The new Big 10 may stretch across the whole country, but the video format remains the same. One note, in case the Big 10 is reading this– you might want to add a disclaimer of “not to scale”, because UCLA is most definitely not that close to Nebraska.
TOP PLAYS OF THE WEEKEND
10: Is a celebration a play? I’m not sure, but this Belgian cyclist won with so much swagger I had to find some way to include him.
8: Anthony Edwards showed off the hops to punctuate another Team USA win in basketball. LeBron, ANT, and company take the court for the quarterfinals against Brazil later this week.
7: Beach volleyball could probably take every spot on this list… for now, we’ll start with this great dig from Team Spain… and it’s a two-for-one, because Spain’s soccer team also had an amazing goal.
6: Tied 0-0 in extra time, Trinity Rodman came up with a moment of magic for Team USA soccer. With the win over Japan, the US advanced to the semifinals.
5: I told you there would be more beach volleyball! This match from late on Sunday was unbelievable– the US team of Hughes and Cheng won in a close third set, thanks in large part to this crazy shot.
4: July’s player of the month in the NL, Brenton Doyle of the Colorado Rockies made a fantastic play at the wall. You know it’s good when you rank ahead of Olympians.
3: Feels weird putting her this low… either way, here’s Simone Biles and her ridiculous gold medal vault (in slow-motion!)
2: Please, please don’t tell him he’s at number two, ok? Noah Lyles ran an insanely fast 100 meter dash. Anyone who can do that deserves to be on this list.
And at NUMBER ONE we have the fastest woman in the world, winning the first gold medal ever in her country’s history. A must-watch moment:
Julien Alfred just won the FIRST Olympic medal EVER for Saint Lucia! 🇱🇨 #ParisOlympics

So awesome. What a great weekend.
TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
MLB: White Sox @ Athletics, 9:40 PM; Phillies @ Dodgers, 10:10 PM
Major League Baseball gives us two options tonight on the west coast: first, two of the best pitchers in the game– Tyler Glasnow and Aaron Nola– as the top teams in the National League face off in LA. Or, you can watch the two worst teams in the American League, where rookie pitcher Jonathan Cannon (1-5, 4.11 ERA) will attempt to end an historical 20-game losing streak for the White Sox. It’s a beautiful game, isn’t it?
