A GOAT in Paris, Jazz in the Bronx
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Tuesday, July 30.
OLYMPICS
I think you know where today’s recap is going to start…
Event of the day: Women’s gymnastics team final
After a silver in Tokyo, Simone Biles and Team USA have won gold in women’s gymnastics. Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, and Jade Carey defeated the silver medalists, Italy, by more than six points. Brazil claimed the bronze.
Watch Biles and her amazing floor routine, and Lee on the beam. Carey battled an illness and still delivered on the vault. Look at the emotion from Chiles as she celebrates after the uneven bars. This team was the best, and they earned their medal.
This won’t be the last you hear of this group– the Americans still have the individual competition later this week, where each are favorites to dominate once again.
Team USA:
Katie Ledecky won her heat in the 1500 meter freestyle by over 17 seconds. Not a typo, that says 17 seconds. She’ll go for gold this afternoon.
A quick US tennis update– on the men’s side, Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul have advanced to the quarterfinals as a doubles team and play in the third round today as individuals in singles. On the women’s side, Emma Navarro and Coco Gauff lost in singles yesterday, with Navarro saying she “didn’t respect [her opponent] as a competitor” and Gauff on the wrong end of a pretty bad line call.
After a 3-0 victory over Guinea, US men’s soccer advanced to the knockout stages. They’ll take on Morocco this weekend for a chance to make it to the semifinals.
The women’s 100 meter backstroke was an incredible race. Americans Regan Smith and Katharine Berkoff won silver and bronze, as Australian Kaylee McKeown held off the challengers to claim gold.
*One more historical Team USA moment has been saved for the Play of the Day section (below)…
Around the world:
Giannis Antetokuonmpo threw down a massive dunk, but Greece lost to Spain in men’s basketball. Meanwhile, Victor Wembanyama and France needed overtime to beat Japan– despite Wemby towering over his opponents.
Egyptian fencer Nada Hafez may have lost in the round of 16, but she announced she has been competing while seven months pregnant!
The Spanish doubles team known as Nadalcaraz won in straight sets– Rafa and Carlitos have so much fun on court it makes me want to grab a racquet and go play. Another tennis legend won the match of the day, though. Andy Murray and his partner Dan Evans saved multiple match points, extending Murray’s tennis career at least one day longer. You can see how much it means to Sir Andy.
Finally, check out this awesome picture from surfing, which finished up yesterday in Tahiti:

MLB
Time to go around-the-horn in Major League Baseball. Let’s get to some highlights:
If the headline today didn’t give it away, Jazz Chisholm is fitting in quite nicely as a member of the New York Yankees. Since joining his new team, Jazz has four home runs and the Yankees are 3-0.
Allow me to re-introduce myself… the Cardinals reunited with Tommy Pham after trading for the sometimes contraversial outfielder on Monday. In his first game back with the team since 2018, Pham hit a pinch-hit grand slam.
Jose Caballero stole home! The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Marlins 9-3 in the battle for Florida.
Eugenio Suarez hit three home runs and the Arizona Diamondbacks destroyed the Washington Nationals 17-0. The playoff teams are starting to separate themselves from the rest of the pack.
Down 5-3 in the ninth inning, the San Diego Padres came back to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in 10 innings. Don’t look now, but the Dodgers lead in the NL West is just 5.5 games.
The on-field action was almost overshadowed by an exceptionally busy trade deadline. For one last time this summer, here are the big deals of the day:
Two teams swung big deals for Marlins relievers: the Orioles picked up Trevor Rogers, and the Padres made a deal for all-star Tanner Scott. Both teams paid steep prices to improve their bullpens.
Two other teams made deals for California starting pitchers: the Mets added Paul Blackburn from Oakland, and the Cleveland Guardians acquired Alex Cobb from San Francisco.
The Pittsburgh Pirates made two smaller deals for hitters. They traded for utility man Isiah Kiner-Falefa from the Blue Jays, and outfielder Bryan De La Cruz from Miami. In just over a week, the Marlins traded away pretty much everyone on their roster.
Rogers wasn’t the only addition for the Orioles, as Baltimore acquired a new bat for their lineup, too. Eloy Jimenez joins the AL East leaders by way of the Chicago White Sox.
Finally, the biggest move of the day was made by (surprise!) the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers traded for LA native Jack Flaherty, adding the best starting pitcher available.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
We’ve got another large contract extension, this time from the world of football– the Chicago Bears have agreed to a four-year, $110 million deal with wide receiver DJ Moore. Remember that name when you draft your fantasy football teams in just over a month.
PLAY OF THE DAY
We have three plays of the day, because I didn’t want to choose just one. Up first, a smooth move by Braves pitcher Bryce Elder:

And finally, a moment for the history books. As time expired, the US women’s rugby team needed a try and a conversion (basically a touchdown and an extra point) to win their first ever Olympic medal. You’ll never believe what happened next:
U-S-A! U-S-A!
TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
MLB: Dodgers @ Padres, 8:40 PM
Clayton Kershaw is back on the mound for LA. He takes on Dylan Cease in his first start since throwing a no-hitter. If last night’s game is any indication, this should be a fun one.
