Glenn takes a job in New York

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, January 22.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

In the men’s game, (13) Texas A&M won a thriller against (16) Ole Miss. Manny Obaseki hit the go-ahead three pointer with 13 seconds remaining and the Aggies won a massive road game 63-62. But arguably the biggest story in the SEC was Arkansas. Head coach John Calipari got his first conference win in charge of the Razorbacks with a 68-65 win over Georgia.

On the women’s side, (24) Michigan beat (23) Minnesota 70-65. Three Wolverine freshman combined for 54 points, led by 23 from standout guard Syla Swords.

You might have noticed that tournament season is almost upon us! The first edition of Remix Bracketology will be released when the calendar turns to February…

NHL

Four games on the ice yesterday– let’s talk about ‘em:

  • LA won a close game 3-2 against the Florida Panthers. Kings forward Samuel Helenius scored his first career goal in the third period, before veteran Adrian Kempe buried the game-winner.

  • Neal Pionk scored the lone overtime goal of the evening, winning a back-and-forth game for the Winnipeg Jets against the Colorado Avalanche.

NBA

The Cleveland Cavaliers have lost just six games on the season. So when Darius Garland, a 90% free throw shooter, got fouled on a last-second three-point attempt to win the game against the Houston Rockets, most of us thought we knew the outcome. But that’s sports for you… Garland missed two out of three shots, and the Cavs lost 109-108.

Oklahoma City is the other team in the NBA with the best record, and their night went a little differently. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had his first 50-point game and the Thunder beat the Jazz 123-114.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has been hired as the new head coach of the New York Jets. A former first-round pick by the Jets, Glenn will now try to lead the team to their first playoff appearance since 2010.

Elsewhere in non-playoff NFL news, the Jacksonville Jaguars have parted ways with general manager Trent Baalke. Interesting timing to say the least, as the Jags are currently in the process of hiring a new head coach. Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Raiders have hired Buccaneers assistant GM John Spytek as their new general manager. Spytek is a former Michigan football teammate of new Raiders owner Tom Brady.

“I’ve been a little bit shocked this week with how players have been treated by the broadcasters,” said Ben Shelton after his quarterfinal win in the Australian Open yesterday. The 22-year old American cited multiple examples of on-court interviews and local TV anchors attempting jokes this week that made everyone uncomfortable. The tennis has been spectacular in Melbourne, but the off-court storylines have grabbed a lot of attention.

The Cleveland Guardians signed reliever Paul Sewald to a two-year deal. Good pickup by Cleveland, who always boast a strong pitching staff.

And the strangest, slowest-developing story in sports is the Jimmy Butler saga in Miami. The Heat have suspended their star for the second time this season as Butler attempts to force his way to a new team. In potentially related news, the Phoenix Suns traded their 2031 first round pick to the Utah Jazz for three worse first round picks in the next few seasons. The trade deadline is February 6th, so if you’re also left with lots of questions as to how this will all work out, we’ll get the answers very soon.
