Game of the year in Tuscaloosa
Good Morning! Today is Monday, September 30. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
GEORGIA-ALABAMA
The Bulldogs and the Crimson Tide have faced off many times in recent years. This may have been the most thrilling meeting yet:
Alabama began the game in complete control– the home crowd was rocking as Jalen Milroe and the Crimson Tide stormed out to a 28-0 lead. Georgia’s first half possessions ended in two punts, two interceptions, a safety, and just one touchdown. At halftime, the score was Alabama 30, Georgia 7.
With 10:40 in the fourth quarter, Bama led 33-15. Even as the Bulldog defense stepped up, it looked like Georgia was running out of time. But Carson Beck connected with tight end Lawson Luckie to cut the score to 33-21, Alabama punted, and Georgia scored another TD minutes later. All of a sudden, the lead was 33-28.
Alabama punted again on the next possession, and the Bulldogs took over on their own 33-yard line. One play later, Georgia had stormed all the way back. A 67-yard touchdown pass from Beck to Dillon Bell gave the visitors a 34-33 lead with 2:31 left.
And would you believe it, Alabama answered right back with a one-play touchdown drive of their own. Milroe connected with 17-year old freshman sensation Ryan Williams (more on him in a moment) on a ridiculous 74-yard touchdown catch-and-run to recapture a 41-34 lead. Georgia drove back down the field, but Beck was intercepted in the end zone with 43 seconds remaining. Somehow, someway, Alabama had won the game– and if you want to relive the madness, I recommend this 23 minute full-game highlight video here.
The standout superstar of the evening was Williams. Both QBs were incredible, combining for over 800 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground and through the air. But as he’s done all season, the 17-year old made the big plays in the big moments for the Tide. Williams finished the game with 177 yards receiving– and as mentioned, one out-of-this-world touchdown:

NFL
Welcome back to another edition of The Remix Six (the name has officially stuck):
It was a good week to be a rookie quarterback! Caleb Williams and the Bears won a tightly contested game against the Rams, while Jayden Daniels and the Commanders put up 42 points in a super impressive victory over the Cardinals. And even though Bo Nix was 7 of 15 with -7 (yes, that says negative seven) yards passing at halftime, the Broncos beat the Jets 10-9. Things are not good for the Jets right now… on the other hand, one really cool note on the Commanders– Washington has punted just one time in their last three games.
The Texans scored a last-minute touchdown to beat Jacksonville 20-17. If I may, a quick word on the Jaguars, who are now 0-4: They look miserable. I told you it would be quick, didn’t I? What else is there to say?
Younghoe Koo nailed a 58-yard field goal with two seconds left to give the Atlanta Falcons a 26-24 win over their division rival New Orleans Saints. An evenly matched game between two potential playoff teams.
The Eagles played without their top two wide receivers yesterday in Tampa, and you could tell. Philly struggled to move the ball in a 33-16 loss against the Buccaneers. Even when the Eagles did score, Tampa managed to steal points out of it:

Two teams remain undefeated at 4-0: Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs and Sam Darnold’s Minnesota Vikings. The Chiefs won a gritty game 17-10 over the Los Angeles Chargers, while Darnold and the Vikings held on for 31-29 victory at Green Bay despite blowing a 28-0 lead.
On Baltimore’s first offensive play of Sunday Night Football, Derrick Henry broke the franchise record and ran for an 87-yard touchdown... and that was basically the end of the game. Despite some Josh Allen magic, Henry and the Ravens cruised to a 35-10 victory.

NCAA FOOTBALL
There were plenty of notable college football moments outside of Tuscaloosa this weekend:
RANKED MATCHUPS:
(7) Miami was almost upset on a last-second hail mary against Virginia Tech on Friday night. I’ve watched this play at least ten times, and I still couldn’t tell you if they made the right call.
One week after failing to knock off Georgia, the upset of the day belongs to Kentucky. The Wildcats took down (6) Ole Miss 20-17 in Oxford.
(23) Kansas State looked dominant in a 42-20 win against (20) Oklahoma State.
(16) Notre Dame has rebounded from their shock upset against Northern Illinois. The Fighting Irish won a tough game 31-24 against (15) Louisville.
(9) Penn State took care of business at home, as the Nittany Lions beat (19) Illinois 21-7.
Arizona upset (10) Utah in Salt Lake City. They may be in a new conference, but Pac-12 After Dark lives on!
THREE STARS:
Ashton Jeanty: The Boise State running back continued his stellar start to the season on Saturday, running for 259 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries. Jeanty leads the nation in both rushing touchdowns and rushing yards by a wide margin this season.
Hajj-Malik Williams: UNLV’s new starting quarterback threw for 182 yards and added 119 on the ground, as the Runnin’ Rebels moved to 4-0 for the first time in over 30 years.
Super Conferences: 12 of the top 13 teams in the new AP poll are members of the Big 10 or SEC. The lone exception is eighth-ranked Miami.
MLB
The MLB regular season is officially* over! We’ll have a full playoff preview tomorrow– but first, there were plenty of highlights from the final weekend:
The game of the weekend was between the Tigers and White Sox on Friday. In one fell swoop, Detroit clinched a playoff spot while Chicago set the record for most losses in a season. That’s the beauty of baseball. Another Tigers note– Tarik Skubal won the pitching triple crown, leading the American League in ERA, wins, and strikeouts.
Shohei Ohtani finished the year with 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases. He led the National League in home runs, RBIs, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. He finished second in batting average, hits, and walks. Now, the best player in the world gets his first taste of playoff baseball. Welcome to October, Shohei.
As the asterisk (below) explains, there are still two games left on the calendar for tomorrow. The double-header between the Braves and the Mets would have very different stakes, however, if Travis d’Arnaud hadn’t hit this walk-off home run for Atlanta on Saturday.
Paul Skenes ended his stellar rookie season by striking out Aaron Judge and Juan Soto on back-to-back at-bats. The Pirates ace will likely win National League rookie of the year over an incredibly stacked field– shoutout to Jackson Merrill, Jackson Chourio, Shota Imanaga, and Masyn Winn. The future of baseball is in very good hands.

GOLF
When the Remix last reported on the President’s Cup on Friday morning, Team USA held a commanding 5-0 lead and looked well on the way to a 10th straight victory in the competition. Then, the International team responded with a 5-0 day of their own on Friday. Although the US recovered to win on Sunday, the weekend was not without some dramatic scenes and incredible golf shots. Here are my three favorites:
Si Woo Kim hits an impossible chip shot to win a hole on Saturday… then hits the Steph Curry “night night” celebration.
Max Homa with an insane eagle on the first hole of his Sunday match.
And of course, Scottie Scheffler chipped in with a ridiculous hole-out of his own…

WNBA
The New York Liberty and Connecticut Sun each took 1-0 leads in their semifinal matchups over the weekend. While New York held of the defending champion Las Vegas Aces 88-77, the Sun stole game one 73-70 from the Lynx in Minnesota. The playoffs continue tomorrow night.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
A massive trade in the NBA shocked the basketball community over the weekend. Fresh off their appearance in the Western Conference finals, the Minnesota Timberwolves dealt all-star center and franchise cornerstone Karl Anthony-Towns to the New York Knicks. In exchange, the Knicks gave up all-star Julius Randle, sixth-man Donte DiVencenzo, and some additional compensation yet to be officially determined. It’s a classic star-power for depth gamble for New York, who fill a need at center and now boast an incredible starting five without much of a bench to support them. For the Timberwolves, the move clears cap space without a significant drop in talent. And if it wasn’t true before, we know one thing now for sure: it’s the Anthony Edwards show in Minnesota.
Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice left Kansas City’s win against LA yesterday with what is likely a torn ACL. Rice is in the top five in the NFL this season in receptions and receiving yards. It’s a huge loss for the Chiefs offense.
Chelsea attacker Cole Palmer scored a Premier League record four goals in the first half on Saturday, as the Blues beat Brighton 4-2. “I should have had five or six,” Palmer said afterwards.
The All-England Lawn Tennis Club has announced plans to add 39 new courts, tripling the size of the famous grounds that host Wimbledon every summer. Maybe that will make it easier to get tickets?
And finally, the Marlins have parted ways with 2023 NL Manager of the Year Skip Schumaker. Schumaker was not under contract past this season, so this move is not as much of a surprise as it may seem. There’s no doubt that Skip, a popular and well-respected former player, will be the skipper of a new big-league team very soon.
TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
NFL: For the second week in a row (and the second of four times this season) we get two games on Monday Night. One of them look a lot more exciting than the other:
Titans @ Dolphins, 7:30 PM on ESPN
Seahawks @ Lions, 8:15 PM on ABC
MLB: It all comes down to this… Mets at Braves, with a playoff spot on the line. The doubleheader starts at 1:10 PM on ESPN, with game two set to follow about 45 minutes after game one ends. Here are the three possible outcomes, and how they affect the NL wild card race:
Braves win both games: Atlanta and Arizona make the playoffs, Mets go home
Mets win both games: New York and Arizona make the playoffs, Braves go home
Braves and Mets split: Atlanta and New York make the playoffs, Diamondbacks go home
