Fly Eagles Fly

Good Morning! Today is Monday, February 10th. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.

SUPER BOWL LIX

Well the Eagles left no doubt about that one… Philadelphia crushed Kansas City 40-22, winning their second Super Bowl in franchise history and capping a truly impressive season. If you’ll allow it, I’m going to very selectively choose a section of my prediction from yesterday’s preview:

The Eagles want to control the game early, wear down the Chiefs defense, and then hand the ball off to Saquan Barkley and let him (literally) run away with a victory. That’s about as clear of a formula as you’ll ever see, and if it works, the Eagles may win by two touchdowns.

Although the Chiefs held Barkley in check (25 rushes, 57 yards), the winning formula was executed to perfection. I picked Kansas City because of Mahomes, mystique, and experience, but it shouldn’t be too surprising that the more talented team with a clearer path to victory won the football game by a large margin. Credit to general manager Howie Roseman and the Eagles front office for putting together a dominant team with standout players at every position. A few notable stats from the big game:

  • Patrick Mahomes was sacked six times and hit 11 times. Facing constant pressure throughout the game, the Chiefs trailed 34-0 before they ever crossed midfield. This game was eerily similar to the last time the Chiefs lost in the Super Bowl, when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat Kansas City 31-9.

  • Let’s hear it for Cooper DeJean! The rookie corner picked off Mahomes and returned the interception for a touchdown, his first career NFL score on his 22nd birthday in the biggest game of his life.

  • The Eagles defense was impressive, dominant, and game-changing, but the MVP was always quarterback Jalen Hurts. Outside of one interception, Hurts was flawless. He threw for 221 yards and rushed for a QB Super Bowl record 72, finishing the game with three total touchdowns.

Three quick thoughts on the non-football events. First, the new Fox scorebug was absolutely atrocious. No one liked that new font. Second, props to Kendrick Lamar on a well-received halftime show. I felt like a live band would have made the performance a bit more dynamic, but with help from Samuel L. Jackson, Serena Williams (!), and SZA, Kendrick delivered on the expectations from fans. Lastly, my favorite Super Bowl commercial was this one starring Tim Robinson and Sam Richardson for Totino’s pizza rolls.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

First, two big results from the women’s game– (4) Texas won an incredibly physical game against (2) South Carolina. The Longhorns snapped SC’s 57-game SEC unbeaten streak with a gritty 66-62 upset. Later, (6) LSU proved their toughness with an 82-77 win over (19) Tennessee.

I’ve been repeating myself every Monday, but the men’s game was another bonkers weekend of upsets. We began with a super impressive 68-62 victory by (12) St. John’s over (19) UConn. If you haven’t yet, it’s time to take the Red Storm seriously. But as I said, things got hectic from there:

  • The number one and two teams in the country both lost on Saturday. (2) Duke was upset at Clemson 77-71, their first loss in the ACC all year. Meanwhile, (1) Auburn fell 90-81 at home against (6) Florida.

  • Creighton won their ninth-straight game, taking down (11) Marquette 77-67. Back in the SEC, (10) Texas A&M beat (15) Mizzou 67-64. I told you it was a crazy weekend, didn’t I?

  • Last but not least, I’m back to being confused by (16) Kansas. The Jayhawks lost 81-73 to Kansas State, a team with a record barely over .500.

GOLF

There were two winners of the Waste Management Phoenix Open over the weekend. Thomas Detry took home first place at 24-under, using a dominant final two rounds to win the tournament by seven strokes. The other winner, however, were golf fans, who enjoyed a wildly entertaining weekend. Shoutout Jordan Speith, putting from bushes and saving pars all over the place. It’s good to see him back in the mix. There were so many great highlights from Phoneix– here are my favorite two:

NBA

Anthony Davis made quite a splash in his Mavericks debut. The new Dallas big man had 26 points, 16 rebounds, and seven assists in a 116-105 victory over the Houston Rockets. Unfortunately, AD left the game early with an injury. Look away Mavericks fans, your worst fears have come true: Davis will be out multiple weeks with an adductor strain.

Steph Curry had 34 points and made eight threes as the new-look Golden State Warriors took down Chicago 132-111. Jimmy Butler scored 25 in his Golden State debut, and if first impressions are any sign of what’s to come, he’s going to fit in pretty well in the Bay:

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

Some fallout from the NBA trade deadline… the Lakers and Hornets have rescinded their trade after Mark Williams failed a physical. Might be sorta awkward for the players to return to their original teams, but that’s business… Ben Simmons agreed to a buyout with the Brooklyn Nets and signed a new deal with the Los Angeles Clippers. The trio of Simmons, James Harden, and Kawhi Leonard are the favorites to win the 2019 NBA championship… and Giannis Antetokounmpo will miss the next few weeks– including the all-star game– after suffering a calf strain.

It was a big weekend for basketball broadcasters. On Saturday, the legendary Dick Vitale made his return to the mic after a two-year hiatus while he battled cancer. One of the most enthusiastic personalities in the sport, it was wonderful to hear Dickie V during Clemson’s upset of Duke. And yesterday, another legend of the sport was on the call for his final game. At 91 years old, Hubie Brown announced basketball games for 35 years. That followed an lengthy career as a coach, including his recognition as NBA coach of the year in 1978 and 2004. Congrats to Hubie Brown on a well-deserved retirement.

Now it’s time for a new segment: Returning or Not Returning! I’m going to give you four people, and you tell me which one is returning next season to their current position:

  1. Lauryn Betts, UCLA center: the junior is a projected top-five pick in the WNBA draft and the best player on the number one team in the country

  2. Aaron Rodgers, New York Jets QB: you already know everything (maybe too much?) about him

  3. Mike Woodson, Indiana basketball coach: has led the team since 2021; the Hoosiers are 14-10 on the season

  4. Kellen Moore, Eagles offensive coordinator: won the Super Bowl yesterday in his first season leading the Philly offense

The only one returning is… Lauryn Betts! "College is the best years of your life, and so I don't think I'd ever give that up," explained Betts, who will play alongside her sister, incoming freshman Sienna Betts, next season. The new Jets regime has decided to move on from Rodgers, Woodson met with Indiana officials and will be stepping away at the end of the season, and Moore is expected to be announced as the new head coach of the New Orleans Saints. Thanks for playing Returning or Not Returning! Hope you had fun.

Finally, I think you should see this ridiculous point played by Carlos Alcaraz on Saturday. Take a moment to appreciate greatness:
