Florida!!!

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, June 9.

STANLEY CUP

Brad Marchand scored less than a minute into game three, and the Florida Panthers were off and running. The defending champs absolutely crushed the Edmonton Oilers last night, who may have left their hockey skills back in Canada. Edmonton committed 15 penalties last night and gave the Panthers way too many power play chances. In the end, Florida rolled to a 6-1 victory, including four goals with the man advantage. You know the Panthers will keep applying the pressure as this series heads to a crucial game four late this week. Before we move on, the highlight of the game came with nine minutes left in the third period and the score already out of reach: it’s the rare ten-man fight!

MLB

Tomorrow I’ll be giving my picks for the upcoming MLB all-star game, so send in any thoughts you might have about your favorite players. This morning we’ve got some game recaps:

  • We had a lot of extra-inning wins yesterday: the Blue Jays beat the Cardinals 5-4 in 10, the Phillies beat the Cubs 4-3 in 11, the Rays beat the Red Sox 10-8 in 11, and the Dodgers won a huge interdivisional game against the rival Padres 8-7 in 10 innings.

  • None were as satisfying as the Diamondbacks walk-off win against the Mariners. After blowing a 4-0 lead in the ninth, Josh Naylor crushed a game-winning grand slam to win the game 8-4 in the 11th.

  • After a rough week, I owe it to Braves fans to point out their victory. Chris Sale was magnificent and Atlanta snapped their losing streak, taking down Milwaukee 7-1.

  • A lot of times people will say things like “that was the best catch ever!” and they show you a great catch that you forget about a few weeks later. Not this one. Do yourself a favor and watch Denzel Clarke turn into Spider-Man:

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

The top prospect in Major League Baseball made his debut yesterday for the Boston Red Sox. Outfielder Roman Anthony batted fifth and played right field at Fenway Park. While his debut was less than ideal, this guy is a legit hitter. Watch out.

We’ve got our final eight in college baseball– these are the teams heading to Omaha for the College World Series: Arizona, Coastal Carolina, Louisville, Oregon State, UCLA, Murray State, LSU, and Arkansas. None of these eight were in the CWS last season.

Forward TJ Oshie announced his retirement yesterday from professional hockey. Oshie debuted with the St. Louis Blues in 2009. During his 16-year career, he played seven seasons for St. Louis and nine years with the Washington Capitals. A Stanley Cup champion and productive goal-scorer, Oshie is best known for his memorable performance in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, where he scored four shootout goals to lead the US over Russia. Congratulations to TJ on a wonderful career!
