Fleetwood wins, football begins
Good Morning! Today is Monday, August 25th. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
GOLF
He’s done it… Tommy Fleetwood has finally won a PGA event. Always in contention and considered one of the top golfers in the world, Fleetwood had previously only won events on other circuits. But this past weekend at the PGA Tour Championships, the Englishmen finished the job. His score of -18 won by three strokes over the field of 30 competitors. And of all tournaments to win, Fleetwood may have picked the best one– he’ll take home a prize of $10 million!
NCAA FOOTBALL
The season has officially started! Most teams kick off this weekend, but we had two notable scores from Week Zero:
(22) Iowa State traveled across the pond to Ireland to take down rival (17) Kansas State 24-21. It wasn’t always the prettiest game, but QB Rocco Becht and the Cyclones came up with the big plays to secure what may prove to be a crucial conference win.
Tied 20-20 as the clock ran down, Hawaii knocked off Stanford with a field goal as time expired.
MLB
Cal Raleigh broke the Major League record for home runs in a season by a primary catcher, but otherwise the past few days were all about the rookies:
The top pitching prospect in all of baseball, Bubba Chandler made his MLB debut for the Pirates. Entering the game out of the bullpen, Chandler threw four shutout innings and secured his first career save. "Kind of everything I dreamed of," said the future ace.
Tampa Bay Rays top prospect Carson Williams hit a home run and drove in three runs in his MLB debut. "It's every kid's dream, and it just got even better," said the shortstop after starring in a 10-6 win over the Cardinals.
Colson Montgomery has been in the big leagues for less than 50 games, but he’s making a name for himself, too. The White Sox infielder homered in all three games this weekend, as Chicago took two of three from Minnesota.
TENNIS
The US Open began yesterday as the tournament split round one into three days. No major stories quite yet, as Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka, Ben Shelton, and other stars rolled through their opening matches. The one notable upset came courtesy of 20-year-old Alex Eala, who rallied from 5-1 down in the third set against (14) Clara Tauson to pull off a stunner. Day one also saw one of the strangest moments I’ve ever seen on a tennis court, as the mercurial former champion (13) Daniil Medvedev practically incited a riot while facing match point against Benjamin Bonzi. You know there’s a good story when the main antagonists are a confused camera man and an unruly New York crowd. The match is ongoing as I write this, but I have a suspicion Medvedev is mounting a serious comeback.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
NBA free agent Malik Beasley is no longer the subject of a federal gambling investigation. One of the top three-point shooters in the league, Beasley had remained unsigned this summer. It won’t be long before he’s picked up by a competitor.
Washington has traded running back Brian Robinson Jr. to the San Francisco 49ers for a sixth-round pick. Last year’s starter, the Commanders believed they upgraded at the position and no longer needed the former third-round pick. Meanwhile, the 49ers acquire much-needed depth at a position where they had been decimated by injuries.
The Baltimore Orioles agreed to an eight-year contract extension with rookie catcher Samuel Basallo. It’s a huge deal for both sides, but also for incumbent catcher and former top pick Adley Rutschman, who might be on the move this winter.
Elsewhere in the big leagues, Phillies ace Zack Wheeler will miss the next six to eight months due to surgery to treat thoracic outlet syndrome. A massive loss for Philadelphia, wishing nothing but the best for Wheeler in his recovery.
Congratulations to the Columbus Sliders, the 2025 champions of Major League Pickleball! Columbus upset each of the top three seeds in the playoffs on their way to the title.
