Feeling Grand in NYC
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, October 9th.
MLB
Wednesday was the last day of 2024 with more than two Major League Baseball games. Our recap begins in Detroit, where the Tigers kept on rolling. The home team scratched across two runs early, and then their self-described “pitching chaos” took over. Detroit’s pitchers shut out the Cleveland Guardians for the second game in a row, and the Tigers won game three 3-0. Take a moment and enjoy the energy of Comerica Park:

Game four was one-sided, and yet New York still managed to make it a signature comeback victory. The Mets had the bases loaded in the first inning– they didn’t score a run. The Mets had the bases loaded in the second inning– they didn’t score a run. The Mets had the bases loaded in the sixth inning– and that’s when Francisco Lindor connected:

Lindor is one of three players in MLB history with multiple postseason grand slams. The shortstop’s big swing gave the OMG Mets the only runs they needed, as New York beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1. The Mets are just one series away from continuing one of the craziest streaks in sports: every team to beat the Milwaukee Brewers in the playoffs has made the World Series. On the other side, it was a worst-case scenario for the Phillies. You may remember what I wrote in The Remix playoff preview:
Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City was rocking last night, especially after Michael Massey tied game three against the Yankees on this two-out triple. But the third game of the day was all about one player: Giancarlo Stanton. New York’s designated hitter stole his first base in over three seasons. More importantly, Stanton went 3-5 with two RBIs, including this game-winning home run in the eighth inning. The Yankees are one win away from advancing to the ALCS.
On the brink of elimination, things did not look good for the Dodgers. All-star first baseman Freddie Freeman was scratched from the lineup before the game with an ankle injury, and Manager Dave Roberts decided the best strategy was the infamous “bullpen game” in lieu of a traditional starting pitcher. But then the game began… pitching on short rest for the first time in his career, Padres starter Dylan Cease got knocked out early. Mookie Betts hit a solo homer, Ohtani had an RBI single, and Will Smith crushed a two-run bomb all before the end of the third inning. Plus the Dodgers bullpen was fantastic, as the Padres went 0-9 with runners in scoring position. Gavin Lux added a home run as the exclamation point, and the Dodgers beat the Padres 8-0. This series heads back to LA for a winner-take-all game five on Friday.
