Dunks, home runs, and half-court heaves
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, January 27.
NBA
Another fun night in the NBA:
Anthony Davis had a spectacular night for the Lakers, dropping 42 points and securing 23 rebounds. With AD leading the way, Los Angeles beat Charlotte 112-107. Don’t look now but the Lakers have won four games in a row.
The Phoenix Suns won a close battle with the LA Clippers, escaping with a 111-109 victory. The two most emphatic points? Although his team lost, those would belong to Derrick Jones Jr.
DERRICK JONES JR. JUST SOARED 😱😱
What an UNBELIEVABLE putback slam!

In case anyone was wondering, Klay Thompson’s still got game. The three-point legend made SEVEN from long-range in the FIRST QUARTER last night! Thompson and the Mavs cruised to a 130-107 win over the Washington Wizards. While we’re on the subject, Washington is 6-39 on the year– that’s historically bad.
The Remix player of the night award goes to Amen Thompson of the Houston Rockets. The second-year guard scored a career-high 33 points, including this clutch bucket to beat the Boston Celtics:

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
(2) South Carolina beat (18) Tennessee 70-63 last night, but the big story of the game was Tennessee head coach Kim Caldwell. After having a baby a week ago, Caldwell missed just one game before returning to the sidelines!
Arizona’s Caleb Love has lived quite a life in college basketball. From championship-winning performances to the most head-scratching decisions you’ll ever see, the fifth-year guard does it all. Facing (3) Iowa State last night, Love began the game 1-10 from three-point range and had just 11 points. But then Caleb Love came up with a miracle. He hit this ridiculous half-court shot (below) to send the game to overtime, before nailing two more threes and leading the Wildcats to an 86-75 upset over the Cyclones. If Arizona makes a run this March, you may be able to point to this remarkable moment as the catalyst:
CALEB LOVE JUST LAUNCHED IT FROM BEYOND HALF COURT TO SEND IT TO OT 😱

NHL
Connor McDavid returned from his three-game suspension and immediately scored a goal. McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers used a dominant second period to defeat the Seattle Kraken 4-2.
It was a battle of the generations last night in San Jose, as the favorite for rookie of the year Macklin Celebrini took on the legend Sidney Crosby. Both stars scored goals in this one, but Celebrini and the home team took home the win. San Jose beat Pittsburgh 2-1.
WINTER LEAGUE BASEBALL!
Do you also find yourself missing the game of baseball? Fear not! We’ve got highlights from game seven of the world series in the Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana (aka LIDOM).
Coached by MLB legend Albert Pujols, the Leones del Escogido faced off against the Tigres del Licey, who sent former MLB all-star Johnny Cueto to the mound as their starting pitcher. This game was truly extraordinary, with a raucous crowd and multiple lead changes. But there was no moment better than this ninth inning, go-ahead blast to deep center field off the bat of Tampa Bay Rays infielder Junior Caminero:
"I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!"

That’s a massive home run! To make things even cooler, Caminero followed up his moonshot with a hall-of-fame bat flip and a home run trot that took over a minute for Caminero to round the bases. Bet you didn’t expect a story about LIDOM in your inbox this morning, did you? Pretty awesome stuff…
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
The Miami Heat have suspended Jimmy Butler for the third time this season. Upon learning he would not be in the starting lineup, Butler walked out of practice. Oh the things a star player will do when they want to be traded…
Speaking of star players not in the lineup, the NBA released the participants for this year’s Slam Dunk contest. Get ready for the high-flying acrobatics of Stephon Castle, Andre Jackson, Matas Buzelis, and two-time defending champion Mac McClung. At this point they may as well bring Blake Griffin out of retirement. I bet he could still jump over a car.
MLB.com released their top 100 prospects list on Monday. I just wanted to shout out Wake Forest University, the school with the most alumni (3) on the list. The Cubs and the Mariners are tied with the most top prospects (7) of any big-league club.
