Dream run continues for Mboko
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, August 6th.
MLB
To the baseball diamond!
Cleveland starter Gavin Williams was two outs away from the first no-hitter of the season… and Juan Soto deposited a ball over the fence for a home run. The Guardians held on for a 4-1 win over the Mets.
Cubs reliever Andrew Kittredge threw an immaculate inning! The rare feat requires nine consecutive strikes resulting in three strikeouts, and Chicago’s late-season bullpen addition got it done. Kittredge’s performance was part of a 6-1 victory over the Reds.
Shohei Ohtani’s 1,000th career hit was a home run deep to center field. The Dodger’s starting pitcher also struck out a season-high eight hitters in four innings of work. Even with Shohei’s incredible displays, LA fell to the Cardinals 5-3.
The Blue Jays scored 20 (twenty!) runs yesterday in Colorado. And no, that’s not just me copying and pasting all week. Toronto swept three games against the Rockies and tallied 45 runs on 63 hits! You guessed it, that’s a record.
Milwaukee is the first team in the big leagues to reach 70 wins on the season– if you made that prediction in spring training… no you didn’t, I don’t believe you. The Brewers beat the Braves 5-4 and currently have the best record in baseball.
TENNIS
Victoria Mboko has officially arrived! The 18-year-old Canadian upset Elena Rybakina in a thrilling semifinal match and secured a spot in the finals of the Canadian Open, one of the biggest tournaments of the year. Mboko needed a wild card from the tournament in order to play the main draw, but now she’s got a chance to win the biggest match of her career at her home event. She’ll take on a resurgent Naomi Osaka in the finals later tonight.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Jen Pawol will be the first female umpire in a Major League Baseball regular season game when she takes the field this weekend in Atlanta. Congratulations to Pawol, a AAA umpire since 2016, on a well-deserved promotion to the big leagues!
The Boston Red Sox have signed rookie outfielder Roman Anthony to an eight-year, $130 million contract. One of the top prospects in the game, Anthony has shown signs of his prolific power during the course of his rookie season. This deal locks him up in Boston through his age 30 season– a huge commitment for both sides, although the total payout can rise based on various achievements that both Anthony and the Red Sox will hope he reaches.
This year’s US Open will pay out the largest pool of prize money in tennis history. The tournament will award $90 million overall to its competitors across singles, doubles, mixed doubles, and wheelchair events. The number breaks the current record of $75 million, held by last year’s US Open.
