Draisaitl does it again
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, June 12.
STANLEY CUP
The Florida Panthers led 3-0 after the first period of game four. Matthew Tkachuck scored two power-play goals and it looked like the home team was on their way to a repeat of game three. But the Oilers fought back. I don’t know what they said in the locker room between the first and second periods– maybe it was the decision to bench goalie Stuart Skinner and replace him with Calvin Pickard? Whatever the Oilers did, it worked. Edmonton scored four unanswered goals and held a 4-3 lead late in the third period. And yet the game wasn’t over, because apparently this Stanley Cup Finals is a rollercoaster. Florida pulled their goalie and managed to do this with 20 seconds remaining:
There was one final twist remaining in this game. For the second time in the series and the fourth time in these playoffs, Leon Draisaitl scored a game-winner in overtime. Yes, that’s a record. Thanks to Draisaitl’s heroics, Oilers won game four and tied the series up 2-2. We’re headed back to Edmonton this weekend for a pivotal game five.
MLB
We’re doing the rare eight-game recap this morning. Here we go!
Is the Rangers offense finally starting to wake up? Texas hit six homers and crushed Minnesota 16-3. That’s twice in one series that the Rangers have scored 16 runs.
Four different teams won by one run last night, the Yankees, Mets, Cubs, and Astros. All four of those winning clubs are currently leading their divisions.
The Colorado Rockies won yesterday, too! Orlando Arcia capped off a three-run ninth inning with a walk-off single to beat the Giants.
6’7” flamethrower Jacob Misiorowski made his MLB debut yesterday for the Milwaukee Brewers, and it did not disappoint. The top prospect began his career with five no-hit innings against the St. Louis Cardinals. Although Misiorowski left the game early with a leg cramp, it was a pretty stellar introduction to the big leagues. Milwaukee stomped on St. Louis 6-0.
The best pitcher in baseball was at it again last night. Tarik Skubal threw seven scoreless innings for the Detroit Tigers, leading his team to a 4-1 win over the Orioles.
GOLF
The US Open is really, really hard. Only 10 players are under par after round one. One golfer, however, was able to navigate Oakmont better than the competition. JJ Spaun posted a bogey-free four under to lead all players. "I kind of came out here with no prior history at Oakmont, not really knowing what to expect, even U.S. Open-wise. This is only my second one. I don't know if that freed me up in any aspect, but I just tried to kind of take what the course gave me,” said Spaun afterwards. There’s a whole lot of golf left this weekend, though, and it’s still anyone’s game. Who knows– maybe we’ll see more incredible shots like this one…
🚨 ALBATROSS ALERT 🚨
@PReedGolf with a 2 on a par 5, just the 4th in U.S. Open history!

NOTEWORTHY NEWS
The New York Rangers have traded Chris Kreider to the Anaheim Ducks for a prospect. It’s a cap-clearing move for New York, who need to readjust their core after missing the playoffs this season. The cost was Krieder, a member of the Rangers since his career began in 2012. Anaheim, meanwhile, adds a productive, veteran goal-scorer. The offseason has begun already!
Congratulations to Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck, this year’s Hart Trophy winner. Hellebuyck is the first goalie to win NHL MVP since 2015, and just the fourth since the league expanded in 1969.
