Don't call it a comeback
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, August 7th.
OLYMPICS
We’ve reached the final few days of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Here’s what you missed from yesterday’s competition
Team USA:
Quincy Hall! Quincy Hall! The young runner won the 400 meters with a finish you have to see to believe. Take a look:
The USA men’s water polo team also had a great comeback, scoring a game-tying goal with 30 seconds left before ultimately winning in a shootout. The Americans advance to the semifinals against Serbia.
For the first time since the sport was introduced to the Olympics in 1996, the USA will not medal in beach volleyball. Mark this one down for redemption in LA in 2028.
I’m not sure I quite understand steeplechase… it’s hurdles, but there’s also puddles of water? It’s entertaining, but also I’m not sure how anyone becomes involved in participating. None of those questions matter to Kenneth Rooks, who pushed the pace and won a silver medal.
Around the world:
The best comeback of the day, however, was in handball. With five seconds remaining, Germany stole the ball and scored a game-tying goal against France to send the quarterfinal game to overtime, where the Germans won and advanced to the semifinal. On a related note, handball is awesome and I believe it should be more popular in America.
Today’s “I can’t believe what I just saw” award goes to artistic swimming. Team USA won silver, while China took home gold. If you haven’t seen this event, it’s mesmerizing. These swimmers are flipping and dancing and somehow not drowning.
MLB
We’re keeping it simple today– three big-time players hit big-time home runs:
Bobby Witt Jr. swatted two long balls as the Royals defeated the Red Sox 8-4. If it weren’t for Aaron Judge, Witt would be running away with the AL MVP.
Jackson Holliday is now the youngest player in American League history to hit a home run in three straight games. Holliday and the Orioles beat the Blue Jays 7-3.
Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber hit not one, not two, but three home runs last night in a 9-4 victory over the Dodgers.
TENNIS
It’s not quite the play of the day, but watch Alexander Bublik’s creative response to a drop shot from Ben Shelton on match point:
No, that technically doesn’t count… but that shot most definitely earned it’s own section in The Remix.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Jim Harbaugh has received a “four-year show cause order, including a one-year suspension” due to recruiting infractions. This is completely separate from the Connor Stallions/spying scandal. Also completely separate– NFL head coach Jim Harbaugh and the NCAA. A little too late with this ruling!
The MLS is making a splash in the transfer market! One of the best German forwards of the last decade, Marco Reus is set to join the LA Galaxy. The Galaxy are first in the western conference, and hope Reus gives them that extra scoring punch to bring home a title.
It’s almost time for the Little League World Series! The LLWS is one of the greatest American traditions, a moment for 12-year olds to be superstars on a national stage. The fun has already begun in regionals, where not one, but two teams have registered walk-off victories.
Rafael Nadal announced he will not be playing in this year’s US Open, marking his absence in three out of four of this year’s Grand Slams. The tennis legend is nearing the end of his career– there’s a chance Rafa retires very soon.
PLAY OF THE DAY
Apologies to Zach Neto of the Angels, who was running away with play of the day honors until Parker Meadows came up with this ridiculousness:
Tip of the cap to you, Mr. Meadows.
TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
MLB: Brewers @ Braves, 12:20 PM
Atlanta is scuffling a bit lately, but veteran starting pitcher Charlie Morton is on the mound to right the ship against Milwaukee. Nothing beats afternoon baseball!
OLYMPICS: I know I’ve said this a lot lately, but today is actually a huge day in Paris. As always, the full Team USA schedule is below. First, here are Thursday’s must-see events:
Women’s Volleyball: USA vs Brazil, semifinals at 10 AM
Women’s Water Polo: USA vs Australia, semifinals at 1:35 PM

The best player in the world faces the best team in the world. Does Nikola Jokic have any chance to pull off an upset?
Follow the action!
