Dominant pitching; Draft recap
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, June 25.
NBA DRAFT
As expected, the NBA Draft kicked off last night with the Dallas Mavericks selecting Cooper Flagg first overall. Washington and San Antonio made some nice additions to their young cores, the Pelicans made more weird moves, and the Celtics picked up an underrated European wing late in the night. You can see the results from the entire first round here. I’m going to highlight a few picks that stood out:
We start with two teams that picked at the top and did a good job building their rosters. Charlotte added a lot of shooting to their team with Kon Knueppel at 4 and Liam McNeeley at 29. The first surprise of the draft came at 5 when the Utah Jazz selected Ace Bailey. They followed that up with a trade for NCAA tournament star Walter Clayton Jr. at number 18.
Brooklyn came into the night with five first round picks… to everyone’s surprise, they selected five players! I loved Egor Demin at 8 and I think Danny Wolf at 27 could work out well, too. The Nets also added two international prospects in Nolan Traoré and Ben Saraf, as well as Drake Powell from UNC. We’re now rooting for the first-ever all-rookie starting five!
The most shocking selecting of the night came at pick 16. The Memphis Grizzlies traded up and chose Cedric Coward at 11, leaving the Portland Trail Blazers to stun the NBA community and select Yang Hansen a few picks later. The 7-footer from China is relatively unheard of, and was expected to last until at least the middle of the second round. Plus, Portland already has three young centers under contract! Hansen has some talent and I, for one, am rooting for the kid. But when ESPN doesn’t have a draft package for you, that normally means something.
Finally, my favorite selection of the night was at number 20. The Miami Heat selected Kasparas Jakucionis, a guard from Illinois. Watch out for this kid, he’s the real deal.
MLB
Now to some on-field action! I hope you like pitching…
… because we’re starting with five very impressive performances on the mound. Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski outdueled Paul Skenes and Milwaukee beat the Pirates 4-2. Yusei Kikuchi had 12 Ks and the Angels won 5-2 against the Red Sox. Nick Pivetta shut down the Nationals with 10 strikeouts and the Padres won 1-0. New York’s Max Fried is the first in the league to 10 wins as the Yankees beat the Reds 7-1. And finally, Jacob DeGrom pitched seven no-hit innings and led the Rangers to a 7-0 win against the Orioles.
The A’s were dominant last night. Nick Kurtz hit a three-run homer and Jacob Lopez pitched seven scoreless innings, leading the locationless Athletics to a 3-0 win over the Detroit Tigers.
Juan Soto hit two homers last night for the Mets. That was plenty of run support for New York, who beat Atlanta for the first time this season.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
More hockey trades! The Edmonton Oilers are sending forward Evander Kane to the Vancouver Canucks for a fourth round pick, clearing some cap space as they attempt to return to the Stanley Cup finals next season.
The Phoenix Suns drafted Duke center Khaman Maluach with the 10th pick last night. I thought it was a great selection, adding a young, athletic center to their rebuild. But then the Suns doubled-down on that idea a few minutes later, trading the 29th pick and a future first to the Charlotte Hornets for former Duke center Mark Williams. So if you’re keeping track, Phoenix is now entirely made up of shooting guards and Duke centers. At the very least, this team has my attention.
Ronald Acuña Jr. is the first player to commit to next month’s home run derby. The Braves star will be a crowd favorite at the event in Atlanta.
