Deadline wrap-up; Upset in Knoxville
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, February 6th.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
We start this morning with a couple of notable scores from the college world:
Tennessee vs UConn used to the biggest rivalry in women’s basketball, but recently the Volunteers have fallen behind the top teams in the game. Well new head coach Kim Caldwell has the orange back in the mix– (19) Tennessee pulled off an enormous 80-76 upset at home against the (5) Huskies. An 11-0 run in the third quarter and clutch shooting down the stretch was the difference.
The Ohio State men had an upset victory of their own last night, taking down (18) Maryland 73-70. Bruce Thornton had 31 points for the Buckeyes, including the game-winning shot with seven seconds remaining.
And now, the beauty of college basketball. Enjoy the final moments of Fairfield vs Marist:
NBA
We continue with highlights from hoops:
Anthony Edwards scored 40 points for the second consecutive night, leading the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 127-114 win over the Houston Rockets.
The Mavericks have a very different team than the one that matched up against the Celtics in the Finals a year ago. But Klay Thompson dropped 25 in the first half and Naji Marshall, Spencer Dinwiddie, and the newly acquired Max Christie each scored at least 15 off the bench. Dallas beat Boston in Boston 127-120.
LeBron James is really good at basketball. An obvious statement, but sometimes it’s important to remind ourselves. LeBron led the Lakers with 42 points, 17 rebounds, and eight assists last night against the Golden State Warriors. Although LA squandered a 26-point lead, they held on for a 120-112 win. Another strong win for the Lakers, who sit fifth in the Western Conference. On the other side, the Warriors are a bit desperate for Jimmy Butler to take the court in their next game. Undrafted free agent and former D-I lacrosse national player of the year Pat Spencer played 17 minutes last night.
NHL
Let’s recap a couple of hockey scores:
Dylan Guenther scored the game-winning goal in overtime for the second game in a row! Utah Hockey Club beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2.
Playing at home in the city he grew up, Matthew Tkachuk scored his second goal of the night with 12 seconds left. Tkachuk’s clutch performance was the difference in a 3-2 Florida Panthers victory over the St. Louis Blues.
Ladies and gentlemen, he did it again! Alexander Ovechkin scored another goal last night, the 879th of his career. Ovi is now 16 goals away from Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record. Oh, and the league-leading Washington Capitals keep winning, this time beating the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3.
GOLF
I could tell you about the first round of the Waste Management Open, but it would be much more fun to show you the best shots of the day:

NBA TRADE DEADLINE
So many players were moved at this record-breaking NBA Trade Deadline, at times it was hard to keep up. Here are the last few notable deals that came in at the buzzer:
The Toronto Raptors sent guard Davion Mitchell to the Miami Heat. A defensive stud, Mitchell will be a great fit in Miami. In addition to a draft pick, Toronto acquired veteran PJ Tucker– that makes three trades in five days for PJ… a dubious record that only Dennis Schroeder can compete with. Schroeder was traded by Golden State to Miami, re-routed to Utah, and flipped to Detroit– all in the last 48 hours! He’s been traded four times this season, and the Pistons will be the ninth team Schroeder takes the floor for in the last eight seasons.
Memphis has ended its brief Marcus Smart era, sending the veteran guard to Washington for struggling second-year player out of Wisconsin, Johnny Davis. As part of the deal, the Grizzlies are also sending Wake Forest legend Jake LaRavia to Sacramento. Maybe not the biggest impact trade, but a trade with names that have important meaning to the valued readers of the Remix!
The big move of the day came from Cleveland. The Cavaliers traded Caris LaVert, Georges Niang, and draft picks to Atlanta for versatile wing De’Andre Hunter. The number four pick in the 2019 draft, Hunter should slot in nicely on the first-place Cavs team.
Finally, the biggest “acquisition” of the day wasn’t an acquistion at all. Oklahoma City announced Chet Holmgren will return to action this weekend. The Thunder have been without their promising young big man since November due to a fractured hip.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Josh Allen is your 2024-25 NFL MVP! The Bills QB received 27 of 50 first-place votes and was presented the award last night at the NFL Honors ceremony. Other winners include Jayden Daniels and Jared Verse for offensive and defensive rookies of the year, Joe Burrow as comeback player of the year, and Kevin O’Connell as coach of the year. The NFL also announced this year’s Hall of Fame class: Antonio Gates, Jared Allen, Eric Allen, and Sterling Sharpe make up the smallest HOF class in almost 20 years. Among those not selected– Eli Manning.
Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, and Kenny Smith “drafted” this year’s NBA all-star teams live on TNT last night. The key word is in quotes, because there’s no way these teams weren’t predetermined. Team Shaq has the guys everyone knows, like LeBron James and Steph Curry. Team Chuck is made up of all the international players (plus two guys with strong international ties). And Team Kenny’s roster is all the young guys who haven’t been on this stage very often. Who really cares though? There’s a clear theme and hopefully that makes the games more entertaining.
Chicago Bears owner Virginia McCaskey has passed away at the age of 102. You can read more about her incredible life here.
Ohio State has agreed to a new deal with head football coach Ryan Day. The seven-year deal will make Day the second-highest paid coach in the country.
Two pieces of baseball news– the Los Angeles Angels signed third baseman Yoan Moncada. And Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter has been sentenced to 57 months in prison.
