Dallas, Dolphins, and Donovan Mitchell
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, November 11.
NFL
Going into Monday Night Football, the state of Florida was 0-11 in FBS, FCS, and NFL games this week. Needless to say there was a lot of pressure on the Dolphins as they traveled to Los Angeles to take on the Rams. It wasn’t pretty, but the Dolphins squeaked out a win, 23-15. Here are the highlights:
Just two touchdowns were scored in this game- Dolphins rookie Malik Washington ran in an 18-yard score, and receiver Tyreek Hill caught a short pass from Tua Tagovailoa. In a game that lacked a lot of offense, these were the winning moments.
Let’s take a moment to celebrate the kickers… Miami’s Jason Sanders went 3-3 on field goals, including two makes from 50 yards. LA’s Joshua Karty was 5-6, with a long of 55 and only missing a long-range attempt from 57.
After a three-game win streak brought them back into the playoff race, the Rams fall to 4-5. Miami, on the other hand, will try to use this win to rescue a lost season. They sit at 3-6, just a couple games back of a playoff spot.
NBA
Five NBA games yesterday, and I’m feeling good so let’s talk about all of ‘em:
12-0. The Cleveland Cavaliers are 12-0. Donovan Mitchell led the way with 36 points and the undefeated Cavs beat the Bulls 119-113.
The Houston Rockets won easily against the Washington Wizards. Alperen Sengun scored 27 points with 17 rebounds for the home team in the victory.
Cam Thomas scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, including a clutch three-pointer with 30 seconds left that ultimately won the game for the Nets. Brooklyn won a close one 107-105 against the struggling New Orleans Pelicans.
Here’s something you don’t see everyday: the tallest player in Oklahoma City’s lineup last night was only 6’6”! The good news for the Thunder is that player is Shai Gilgeou-Alexander. SGA dropped a career-high 45 points, and OKC took down the Clippers 134-128. Impressive stuff from a young Thunder team missing some notable players due to injury.
But the star of the night was none other than Victor Wembanyama. Wemby had 34 points and 14 rebounds in a dominant performance against Sacramento. Chris Paul recorded 11 assists and seven Spurs scored double-digit points as San Antonio beat the Kings 116-96. And of course, the game wouldn’t be complete without this crazy block:
NHL
Six NHL games yesterday, and three notable results:
Nathan MacKinnon became the first player in the league to reach 30 points on the season, but it was Sam Girard who notched the game-winner for Colorado. The Avalanche won 3-2 against the Nashville Predators in OT.
Philadelphia defeated San Jose 4-3 in a shootout, thanks in large part to this beautiful finish by Flyers rookie Matvei Michkov.
Not to steal the caption (below) word for word, but the Dallas Stars really did show up ready to play. They scored six goals in the first period on the way to a 7-1 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins:
The @DallasStars came to play tonight 💪
They put up six goals in the opening frame and Mason Marchment already has four points!
