Cowboys, Mariners, and a message from Ueck
Good Morning! Today is Monday, September 13. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
NFL
Well the Falcons just finished beating the Vikings on Sunday Night Football. I don’t blame you if you fell asleep and missed the ending– don’t worry, only one touchdown was scored. More importantly, the Green Bay Packers are my official pick to win the Super Bowl. Bookmark this page for February. Alright, enough preamble…Week Two recap. Here. We. Go.
We have to start with the unfortunate news out of Cincinnati. The Bengals beat the Jaguars yesterday, despite losing QB Joe Burrow to a serious injury. Burrow will miss multiple weeks and is being evaluated for what’s known as turf toe. A huge story to monitor as this season gets underway.
So many points were scored yesterday! The Lions put up 52 in a win over the Bears, Baltimore scored 41 to beat the Browns, and the Patriots, Bills, Seahawks, and Rams each scored 30+ in their wins.
Our headline matchup going into the weekend was the Super Bowl rematch between Kansas City and Philadelphia. This one was a tightly-contested defensive battle, but in the end, the Eagles kept up their winning ways, holding on for a 20-17 victory. Meanwhile, KC is 0-2 to start the year…
We had a bit of kicking madness in the late games. Trailing 27-3 in the second half, Carolina came all the way back, recovered an onside kick, and had a chance to beat the Cardinals! Sadly, the Panthers fell short. However, the Colts had more success with their late-game kicking heroics, nailing a game-winner to beat the Broncos 29-28. Indianapolis still has yet to punt this season!
That brings us to our game of the week, where the Cowboys faced off against the Giants. Someone asked me if either team was good this year. I don’t know the answer to that yet, but I do know this game was electric. Russell Wilson had some of the greatest and worst throws you could ever imagine. 20 points were scored in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter! But it was kicker Brandon Aubrey who stole the show, eventually nailing this 46-yarder to win the game for Dallas 40-37 in overtime. Take a look at the highlights from this wild one:
NCAA FOTBALL
We continue with football, time-traveling back to Saturday and a fun college slate:
We had three ranked vs ranked matchups: Miami took care of business with a 49-12 win, ending the dream start to the year for USF… Texas A&M won a thriller 41-40 over Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are now 0-2 and face a steep uphill climb to get back to the playoff… and Tennessee missed a field goal at the end of regulation, sending their game to overtime against Georgia. The Bulldogs came up with a stop in extra time, defeating the Volunteers 44-41 in one of the games of the year so far.
But college football is for everyone, not just the top 25. Check out this ridiculous touchdown catch that saved a good deal of cash for Villanova fans at the end of their blowout loss at Penn State:

And of course, we have to talk upsets. Vanderbilt jumped into this week’s top 25 with a strong 31-7 win at South Carolina. And Georgia Tech pulled off the fire-drill field goal as time expired, taking down Clemson. The Yellow Jackets are 3-0 and ranked 18 in the country. Continuing an accidental new tradition where I highlight a duel-threat winning QB, Haynes King might be a darkhorse Heisman candidate.
MLB
To the diamond we go!
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: watch out for the Seattle Mariners! They’ve won NINE games in a row and now sit atop the AL West, one game ahead of the Houston Astros. Oh, and Cal Raleigh tied some guy named Mickey Mantle for most home runs in a season by a switch hitter.
The NL East is a tale of two cities. Philadelphia holds a 12 game lead in the division and officially clinched a playoff spot. Then you have the New York Mets, who finally won yesterday to stop an eight-game losing streak… although this Jeff Passan tweet from Friday afternoon still feels relevant:
The New York Mets, losers of six straight, are down 6-0 and facing Jacob deGrom. Since starting 45-24 and owning the best record in MLB, the Mets are 31-47, better than only the Rockies, Twins and Nationals. This isn't a collapse. It's a disintegration.

Not enough people are celebrating the incredible rookie season that Nick Kurtz is producing. Maybe the longest home run of the season will catch your attention:
PLAYOFFS AND PREMIER
The WNBA playoffs began yesterday. Watch out for the defending champion New York Liberty, who went on the road and stole game one from the Phoenix Mercury.
Erling Haaland scored two goals and Manchester City beat their rivals Manchester United 3-0. A more detailed account is in the future, but just know that the Premier League is off to a roaring start this fall. With four wins to start the year, Liverpool sits atop the table.
NEWSWORTHY
Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler tore his Achilles in Thursday night’s game in Green Bay. The veteran will miss the remainder of the season.
UCLA and Virginia Tech have each fired their head coaches after 0-3 starts to the season. The Bruins parted ways with second-year coach DeShaun Foster after losses to Utah, UNLV, and New Mexico. The Hokies let go Brent Pry the day after a 45-26 loss to Old Dominion.
Congratulations to Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson, the youngest player in NFL history to reach 500 career catches.

Today’s quote is a letter written by the great Bob Uecker. The beloved broadcaster passed away in January, but wrote this letter on the occasion that his Milwaukee Brewers made their way back to the playoffs this season. Naturally, they were the first team in the league to clinch a spot:
