Cinderella dances on in Paris

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, June 4.

STANLEY CUP

Last year, Leon Draisaitl was held scoreless in the Stanley Cup Finals. You could make the case it was one of the reasons the Oilers went down 3-0 to the Panthers and lost the series. Well this year, Edmonton’s leading scorer got things started with a goal just 66 seconds into game one–

Florida are the defending champs for a reason, however, and the Panthers fought back. They took a 3-1 lead into the third period and “here we go again…” was the prevailing thought for the home fans. But this game was far from over. Edmonton tied things up at three, sending game one into overtime. That’s when Draisaitl slotted home a beautiful game-winner on the power play:

These are two evenly matched teams playing hockey at the highest level. So if you weren’t convinced by the title of today’s issue or today’s recap (which, admittedly, does not do the excitement of this game justice) I recommend you tune in going forward.

FRENCH OPEN

The final four quarterfinals were played yesterday in Paris. Here’s who booked their spot in the semis:

  • Lois Boisson just keeps winning! The unranked wild card from France is into the semifinals of Roland Garros after beating talented teenager Mirra Andreeva 7-6, 6-3. I think these stats put her underdog run in perspective: Boisson is the first woman to reach the semis of her first Grand Slam since Jennifer Capriati in 1990. She’s the first Frenchwoman into the French semis since Marion Bartoli in 2011. And while Boisson entered Roland Garros ranked 361 in the world, she’ll leave inside the top 70. "It's incredible. Thank you for supporting me like this. I have no words," she told the crowd after her win.

  • After four match points lost and a slightly nervy finish, 38-year-old Novak Djokovic is back in the semifinals of the French Open. The three-time champ dispatched last year’s runner-up Alexander Zverev 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. I can say after watching this one that if there were any questions about Novak’s fitness or form, he answered all of them. Up next? The number one player in the world, Jannik Sinner. Buckle up.

  • And in the other two semis, the aforementioned Sinner rolled yet again in straight sets, defeating Alexander Bublik. Meanwhile, top-ranked American Coco Gauff continued her impressive clay-court season with a 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 win over Madison Keys.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

The Phoenix Suns are hiring Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott as their new head coach. This summer will be an interesting one for the Suns as they manage both a disappointing last season and a very highly-paid roster.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver was asked about next year’s all-star game, which happens to take place during the Winter Olympics. What better time to feature some form of USA against the world?" said Silver. While we wait for more details, this is a very exciting development as the league tries to rescue the midseason exhibition.
