Castellanos calls his shot

Good Morning! Today is Monday, September 1st. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.

NCAA FOOTBALL

We’re back! But before we highlight the best moments from week one, we need to take a moment to talk about Lee Corso. Whether you are a fan of the shenanigans of College Gameday or not, there is no questioning that Corso and the crew on Saturday mornings revolutionized the game and the way it is covered. Now 90 years old, Corso gave his final picks on this past weekend’s show, placing the famous Ohio State Buckeye on his head for the final time. Naturally, he went 6-0 in his last round of picks. Now to the action:

  • It’s going to be tough for Boise State to return to the playoffs this year after they were demolished by UCF 34-7 on Thursday night. The Knights pulled off this great fake punt for a touchdown, too.

  • Arch Manning and (1) Texas were about as dynamic as dry wall on Saturday morning. (3) Ohio State’s defense completely shut down the Longhorns and the defending champs grinded out a 14-7 win.

  • Upset alert! Florida State welcomed (8) Alabama into Tallahassee and rolled the Tide, dominating their SEC opponent 31-17. Is this the end of an era? An overreaction, sure, but you may want to read the quote at the end of today’s Remix if you don’t understand the significance of this victory.

  • Our two best games of the weekend saw (9) LSU take down (4) Clemson 17-10 and (10) Miami survive a late comeback by (6) Notre Dame for a 27-24 victory. Two well-played games between talented teams with huge expectations for the season.

  • And last but certainly not least… Kent State won! They broke a 21-game losing streak, which was the longest active streak in college football.

TENNIS

This US Open has given us a bit of everything. The favorites remain, but there has been no lacking of drama. A few storylines to know as we begin week two in New York:

  • Taylor Fritz is the last remaining American man. Tommy Paul and Francis Tiafoe were sent packing over the weekend, while Ben Shelton was forced to retire due to a shoulder injury. No pressure Taylor– all you have to do in your next match is beat some guy named Novak Djokovic.

  • Last night may have given us the match of the tournament! Taylor Townsend, who earned the respect of the entire tennis world with the grace in which she’s handled herself through conflict this past week, had eight match points against Barbora Krejcikova… and Krejcikova won! The Czech advanced by a score of 1-7, 7-6 (15-13), 6-3.

  • We’ve almost down to our final eight competitors in each draw. In the men’s bracket, it’s Fritz vs Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz vs Jiri Lehecka on one side. Jannik Sinner/Alexander Bublik will face Lorenzo Musetti/Jaume Munar, and Felix Auger-Aliassime/Andrey Rublev plays the winner of Leandro Riedi/Alex de Minaur to fill out the top half.

  • The women’s bracket sees Aryna Sablenka take on a resurgent Marketa Vondrousova and Jess Pegula vs Krejcikova in the top half. Amanda Anisimova/Beatriz Haddad Maia play against Ekaterina Alexandrova/Iga Swiatek, and Marta Kostyuk/Karolina Muchova faces the winner of the match everyone is talking about, Coco Gauff vs Naomi Osaka, to round out the bottom of the draw.

MLB

There’s just one highlight from the weekend that you need to know about– for the first time in Major League history, three players in one season hit four homers in a game! This latest occurrence was performed by Phillies slugger and surprise MVP candidate Kyle Schwarber. He blasted four dingers in a blowout victory over the Braves.

But now the calendar has turned to September. You’re either a team calling up prospects and planning your offseason, or you’re hunting a playoff spot and preparing to play deep into October. With one exception, I drew the line at having a record over .500. If you aren’t a winning team at this point in the season, well…

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

The Phillies picked up struggling starter Walker Buehler after he was released earlier this week by the Boston Red Sox. One of last year’s World Series heroes for LA, it’s a low-risk, high-reward move by Philadelphia.

Hey, remember the NBA? Let’s check in on the world of basketball, as some of the top players from around the globe began play at the Euros this week. Surprise, surprise, Luka Doncic is still really good. He recorded just the fourth triple-double at EuroBasket since 1995 and led Slovenia to an 86-69 win over Belgium.

A little bit of clean-up following our first Remix Breaking News post last Friday– in case you missed it, Micah Parsons was traded by the Dallas Cowboys to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for two first-round picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark. The star pass rusher immediately signed the most expensive contract for a non-quarterback in NFL history, affirming his commitment to Green Bay and establishing the Packers as a legit Super Bowl contender. This gives us a chance to be a better team,” explained Cowboys owner and general manger Jerry Jones. Pretty crazy to hear that quote twice this year after a team from Dallas traded away their best player.

“They don’t have Nick Saban to save them. I just don’t see them stopping me,” –Boston College QB Tommy Castellanos before week one. Turns out, he was right

"I just show people what it's like to be a human, and I have bad days, but I think it's more about how you get up after those bad moments and how you show up after that. I think today I showed that I can get up after feeling the worst I've ever felt on the court," –Coco Gauff, after an emotional, hard-fought victory on Thursday

See you on Thursday!
