Carlos Alcaraz is really good at tennis
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Tuesday, June 3rd.
FRENCH OPEN
Tommy Paul is a really good tennis player. The American is ranked 12th in the world, earned his spot in this year’s French Open quarterfinals, and had two career wins over his upcoming opponent. At times yesterday, Carlos Alcaraz made him look like an amateur. The defending champion cruised to a 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 victory in less than two hours, covering every inch of the red clay and blasting winners at absurd angles. When Alcaraz is playing at his best, there’s few who can touch him. Elsewhere in yesterday’s quarters:
Lorenzo Musetti defeated Francis Tiafoe 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Musetti will face Alcaraz in the semifinals.
Iga Swiatek beat Elina Svitolina and Aryna Sabalenka took care of Qinwen Zheng, setting up the first meeting this season between (arguably) the top two players in the world. Sabalenka is ranked number one for good reason, but Swiatek is the three-time defending champ and has only lost one time in her career at this event. Should be a fun one tomorrow morning!
MLB
I’d like to talk baseball now, is that alright? Good, here’s what went down yesterday on the diamond:
Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte each hit double dingers lat night to lead the Diamondbacks to an 8-3 win over Atlanta
Paul Skenes became the seventh pitcher all-time (and third in the last 45 years) to lose two games in a season despite throwing eight innings, striking out eight or more batters, walking one or fewer hitters, and allowing one or fewer run. That’s not what you want to see if you’re at Pirates fan.
Colorado won a series! Hunter Goodman hit another home run and the Rockies won two games in a row for the first time in what feels like centuries. Sure it was against the Marlins, but a win is a win!
Two west coast teams ended the night with extra-inning victories. The paders beat the Giants in the 10th for the second night in a row, while the Dodgers mounted a late-game comeback and walked-off the Mets 6-5.
Finally, take it away TJ!
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Days after reaching their first Eastern Conference Final in 25 years, the New York Knicks have fired head coach Tom Thibodeau. I’ll let New York’s statement to NBA Insider Shams Charania explain the decision–
The Knicks are singularly focused on their pursuit of a championship and believe a new voice will serve as the focus for the organization's next step, sources said. After five seasons with the Knicks, Tom Thibodeau is out as head coach.

Texas Tech paid pitcher NiJaree Canady over $1 million in NIL money to transfer from Stanford and lead their softball team. The investment has paid off, with the Red Raiders booking an appearance in their first Softball World Series Championship later this week. Since the postseason began, Canady has thrown every pitch for Texas Tech. That’s right, all 362 pitches in Super Regionals and the first few rounds of the World Series, including an elimination of defending champion Oklahoma. 362 pitches! That’s incredible.
If you’re someone who reads into omens and signs, maybe go place a bet on the Thunder to win the NBA Finals. Indiana’s plane to Oklahoma City was diverted to Tulsa last night due to a tornado warning and severe storms in the area. Everyone is fine and it’s really not that big of a story, but… I don’t know where I’m going with this actually. Maybe you can tell I’m ready to watch some basketball again…
Today has become a very visual Noteworthy News section, but you have to see the new Orlando Magic rebrand for yourself. It’s an updated-throwback-reimagining that looks super cool, but feels a bit gimmicky. Or at least that’s my opinion, I’ll let you decide for yourself:
