Canada, Bregman, and buzzer-beaters
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, February 12.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Another day of college basketball results that no one saw coming:
Villanova won a huge game against (9) St. John’s. Tyler Perkins hit the go-ahead three with eight seconds left and the Wildcats handed the Red Storm just their second conference loss of the year. The 73-71 win may be the difference for Nova on Selection Sunday.
I really, really don’t want to talk about it, but Wake Forest had a monumental collapse last night at home against Florida State. After leading by 15 with eight minutes to go, the Demon Deacons scored just six points and found themselves tied with 30 seconds remaining. A dunk restored a 69-67 lead, but that’s when the madness began– I’m linking the video here, but also warning any Wake fans that haven’t seen the game. It’s maddening. Not a good result for a team trying to make the main bracket of March Madness for the first time 2010.
Finally, the best play of the night award belongs to TCU. Take a look at this game-winning shot:
NBA
Every team in the NBA took the floor last night. Here are the scores that stood out the most:
The Boston Celtics cruised to a 116-103 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Jayson Tatum led the way with 32 points and 14 rebounds.
Karl-Anthony Towns followed up Tuesday’s 40-point game with 44 more last night. Still, it took a Jalen Brunson game-winner with 11 seconds in OT for the Knicks to beat the Hawks 149-148.
Amen Thompson had an 18-point, 11-assist, 10-rebound triple-double and the Houston Rockets took over in the fourth quarter, beating the Phoenix Suns 119-111.
The high-scorer of the night was Denver’s Jamal Murray, who dropped a career-high 55 in a win over the Portland Trail Blazers. Nikola Jokic recorded his 25th triple-double of the year, too.
Kyrie Irving had zero assists last night for the Dallas Mavericks. However, he scored 42 points and drew a key charge with seconds remaining to seal a 111-107 win over the Golden State Warriors.
4 NATIONS HOCKEY
Canada’s first goal last night against Sweden was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen on ice. From McDavid to Crosby to MacKinnon:
After that dream start, however, Canada struggled to put Sweden away. The team from Europe battled back from 2-0 and 3-1, eventually taking the game into overtime. But the captain stepped up again when it mattered most– Sid the Kid found Mitch Marner for the game-winner and Canada escaped with a 4-3 overtime victory. What a thrilling start to the tournament!
SOCCER
Everton and Liverpool have been fierce rivals since 1894. With Everton planning a new stadium, however, yesterday was the last time these two teams would face off with their homes separated by just a mile. There’s your dramatic set-up. Now, the wonderful conclusion that only the beautiful game could execute:

NOTEWORTHY NEWS
At long last, the final big free agent has picked a new team. After a long stand-off, third baseman Alex Bregman reached a deal with the Boston Red Sox for three years and $120 million. With Rafael Devers entrenched at third, the former Astro is expected to play second. But wherever he ends up defensively, there’s no doubt that Bregman strengthens the lineup and brings championship experience to Boston.
We focus a lot on the pros, but at the end of the day, each and every one of us are athletes. Please enjoy this wonderful video:
