Burns, baby Burns!
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Tuesday, June 24.
MLB
Just picking four games from yesterday, but I gotta tell you– Major League Baseball is pretty exciting right now. Turn on any game any day of the week and you’re going to see something fun.
Have a night Christian Moore! The Angels rookie blasted a game-tying home run in the eighth inning. Then in the 10th, he delivered a two-run walk-off blast! LA beat Boston 3-2.
They say defense wins championships, but it can also be the difference on a random Tuesday in June. Masyn Winn tagged from second to score on this fly ball to Pete Crow-Armstrong, who forgot how many outs there were. That run was enough for St. Louis to hold on to an 8-7 lead in the ninth inning, where Nolan Arenado made a beautiful bare-handed play to get the final out and secure a victory. The Cardinals won a thriller over their rival, and are just 2.5 games out in the NL Central.
Last year’s number two pick out of Wake Forest, Chase Burns zoomed through the minor leagues to make his major league debut for Cincinnati last night. The flame-throwing starter struck out the first five batters he faced, including Aaron Judge! Burns finished his start with eight Ks and just three earned runs after five innings. Pretty impressive stuff from the rookie, plus the Reds beat New York 5-4 with a walk-off single in the 11th. That’s quite a debut!
Congratulations to Ronald Acuña Jr, the eighth active player to reach 200 career stolen bases! Acuña and the Braves beat the Mets 7-4.
TRIVIA: Who are the seven others with 200+ stolen bases? answer at the end
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Kristaps Porzingis is the latest to be dealt by the Boston Celtics, who facing a season without Jayson Tatum and an expensive salary tax, continue to reshape their roster. Porzingis has been sent to the Atlanta Hawks as part of a three-team deal. Boston will receive Georges Niang and a second-round pick, Atlanta receives the talented seven-footer and a second-round pick, and the Brooklyn Nets acquire Terrance Mann and the 26th pick in tonight’s draft. A curious deal for the middle-of-the-pack Hawks, but they got the best player involved so maybe it’ll work out. As for Brooklyn, they now own five first-round picks tonight. Get ready, they’re going to trade up.
It’s going to be tough for this offseason to give us an odder trade than the other big one from yesterday, however. The New Orleans Pelicans are sending CJ McCollum (plus Kelly Olynyk and a second-round pick) to the Washington Wizards for Jordan Poole, Saddiq Bey, and the 40th overall pick in this week’s draft. McCollum has a very expensive contract, but the young Wizards have plenty of cap space. He’ll be a great veteran teacher as they continue to build in Washington. New Orleans, apparently, is going to trust the dynamic duo of Jordan Poole and Zion Williamson? I’m not entirely sure the plan for the Pels besides maybe clearing cap space, and I have yet to read any experts that understand it either.
Kyrie Irving will decline his player option for next season and instead sign a new three-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks. It’s the expected outcome and a good deal for both sides, as Kyrie will miss the majority of this season rehabbing his ACL.
Whit Merrifield announced his retirement from baseball yesterday. The nine-year veteran was a three-time all-star during his time with the Royals and Blue Jays, before ending his career with the Phillies and Braves.
Time for another jersey announcement! The St. Louis Blues revealed an updated logo and a new set of uniforms, based on their classic colors from the 60s and the special edition Winter Classic jerseys they’ve worn in recent years. Personally, I think this is one of the best sets of jerseys in the entire National Hockey League… but I’ll let you be the judge:

Duke standout Cooper Flagg will be the first overall pick to the Mavericks, while the Spurs are expected to take Rutger’s Dylan Harper at number two. The draft really begins with Philadelphia at pick three, who may trade out of their spot, select Baylor’s VJ Edgecombe, or surprise us all with another third option… should be an intriguing evening!
