Block that kick!
Good Morning! Today is Monday, September 22. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
But first, one of the absolute coolest things I’ve seen in sports:
What a special moment! Congratulations to Mike Trout on an incredible milestone and props to this fan for creating a lifelong memory.
NFL
A bit of a pattern emerged in yesterday’s games... let’s get to it:
The Philadelphia Eagles trailed the Los Angeles Rams 26-7 in the third quarter. After an impressive comeback gave the defending Super Bowl champs a one-point lead, the Rams looked set to steal back a win with a last-second field goal… until the kick was blocked! Jordan Davis ran the loose ball back 61 yards for a touchdown and Philly pulled off an impressive 33-26 victory:
The Cleveland Browns trailed the Green Bay Packers 10-0 with less than four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. A crazy minute of scoring and forcing turnovers tied the game at 10-10, but Green Bay lined up for a game-winning field goal with under 30 seconds to go… until the kick was blocked! The Browns recovered and Joe Flacco led a 16-yard drive down the field to set up rookie Andre Szmyt for a game-winning field goal as time expired. Cleveland pulled off an impressive 13-10 upset victory.
The New York Jets trailed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-6 late in the fourth quarter. After an impressive comeback brought the Jets within six points, the Bucs lined up for a field goal to stretch their lead to nine points and effectively win the game… until the kick was blocked! Will McDonald returned the loose ball 50 yards for a touchdown and New York took a 27-26 lead! But then Baker Mayfield drove the length of the field and set up a game-winning field goal as time expired. Tampa escaped with a 29-27 victory. I hope you saw that twist coming… it’s the rule of threes.
Now that the blocked field goal portion of The Remix is out of the way, we turn our attention to the blowouts. QB Michael Penix was benched and the Falcons got hammered 30-0 by the Panthers… Vikings corner Isaiah Rodgers had one of the greatest games ever, forcing three turnovers and scoring two touchdowns to lead Minnesota in a 48-10 womping of the Cincinnati Bengals… and the New Orleans Saints trailed by three scores at the end of the first quarter! They lost to Seattle 44-13.
How about Da Bears! Head coach Ben Johnson drew up the play of the week and Caleb Williams delivered the best game of his young career. Everything went right for Chicago as they beat the Dallas Cowboys 31-14.
Finally, we return to our roots in the kicking game. After an ugly, defensive slugfest of a game, the 49ers beat the Cardinals 16-15 on a field goal as time expired. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers remained undefeated and won a fantastic back-and-forth affair 23-20. LA took down their division rival the Denver Broncos thanks to the heroics of Justin Herbert and this Cameron Dicker last-second field goal:
NCAA FOTBALL
As always, there were plenty of great college games this weekend, too:
Oh how the mighty have fallen… Clemson was blown out a home 34-21 by Syracuse. Dabo’s Tigers are 1-3 on the season.
Two top-25 teams narrowly avoided a loss against talented conference rivals. Michigan survived Nebraska 3027, while Mizzou beat South Carolina 29-20.
Our win of the week belongs to the Hoosiers! Indiana destroyed Illinois 63-10 in a battle of top-25 teams. "We broke their will," explained IU head coach Curt Cignetti.
Oklahoma won a huge ranked-vs-ranked game against SEC rival Auburn thanks to a John Mateer Heisman moment. But the Sooner victory comes with a strange footnote, as the refs admitted later they missed a blatantly obvious call on this Oklahoma trick-play touchdown.
Our last top-25 duel of the weekend saw Texas Tech beat Utah 34-10. Watch out for the Red Raiders, who are flying a bit under the radar at the moment.
MLB
Alright here’s how we’re gonna do this– tomorrow, I’ll send out a special edition Remix previewing the final week of the regular season. Most teams don’t play today anyway, so take today to catch your breath. But keep an eye on your inbox tomorrow, because these playoff races are incredibly close! Today I’m going to share highlights from the weekend. There were some really amazing baseball moments, starting with a (literal) blast from the past:
Salvador Perez hit his 303rd career home run. It came against Max Scherzer, who gave up Salvy’s first career homer back in 2011!
There were countless emotional moments from this weekend in LA, where Clayton Kershaw made his last regular season start at Dodger Stadium. But one of my favorites came on Friday night– Kershaw left the game in the fifth, when the Dodgers trailed 2-1. That’s when Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts drilled back-to-back home runs and LA clinched a playoff spot. It felt like a true passing of the torch.
My notes here just say, “Cal Raleigh and Mariners madness.” That about sums it up. The switch-hitting catcher set Seattle’s single-season home run record on Saturday and hit his league-leading 58th homer on Sunday. Oh, and this was during a crucial three-game set against the Astros! Naturally, the Mariners swept all three games to take a three-game lead in the AL West– check out the crazy Victor Robles double play that helped seal one of the victories. The Mariners are so close they can taste the postseason. But more on that playoff race tomorrow…
Speaking of, we’ll get into the ramifications of the losses later, but we need to first take a moment to appreciate the absurdity of what happened to New York. Only the Mets could lose in extra innings to the Nationals on Saturday because of an inside-the-park home run. And only the Mets could lose again on Sunday because center fielder Jacob Young turned into a hacky-sack-Spider-Man-baseball-wizard… seriously, you have to see these two catches:
WNBA
A’ja Wilson was named WNBA MVP for a fourth time this weekend. But Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces dropped game one of the semifinals to the Indiana Fever. Kelsey Mitchell led the way with 34 points for the Fever.
The visitors were unable to steal game one in the other semifinal matchup. A balanced performance by the Minnesota Lynx earned an 82-69 victory over the Phoenix Mercury.
NEWSWORTHY
LA Kings captain Anze Kopitar is hanging up his skates at the end of the season. Drafted in 2005, Kopitar was the first Slovenian to play in the NHL. He spent his whole career with the Kings and won two Stanley Cups. It’s the end of an era in LA:
Should we remake this, @Dodgers? 🤔

It was a big weekend for Cups in tennis. Italy beat the US in the finals of the Bille Jean King Cup, winning the prestigious event for the second year in a row. Meanwhile in San Francisco, Team World beat Team Europe in the Laver Cup. Even though he lost, Carlos Alcaraz still stole the show.
We’ll wrap things up with the Injury Report: Dodgers catcher Will Smith has a broken hand and may miss the postseason… Cardinals running back James Conner and Chargers running back Najee Harris both suffered season-ending injuries… Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb says he’ll be back next week after suffering an ankle injury and missing yesterday’s contest against Chicago.
