Baseball's day at the track

Good Morning! Today is Monday, August 4th. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.

MLB SPEEDWAY CLASSIC

Rain drowned out the game and delayed it until Sunday, but Major League Baseball put on quite a show Saturday night at the first ever Speedway Classic. And if anyone ever asks, you tell them Eli White is the only Major Leaguer to hit a home run in the state of Tennessee… plus he did it twice! Take a look at the first pro ballgame at Bristol Motor Speedway:

GOLF

Congratulations to Cam Young on his first career PGA win! The talented golfer out of Wake Forest won the Wyndham Championship by six strokes.

And from the LPGA, the official Remix shot of the weekend:

TENNIS

The US summer hard-court season is in full force! While the Canada Open finishes up on Thursday, the tennis world prepares to descend on Cincinnati. Take a look at some of the incredible action on its way to Ohio:

A few other baseball notes from regular stadiums this weekend:

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

The Summer of Luka continues, as LA’s newest superstar signed a three-year, $165 million contract extension with the Lakers. The deal sets up Doncic for a massive $400+ million contract after 2028, which could potentially set all sorts of records. In shape, bag secured, and with the whole city behind him– Luka’s Lakers aren’t messing around.

Sorry if this is a tough read for Dallas sports fans today… star defensive end Micah Parsons has requested a trade from the Cowboys, amidst a contentious and prolonged contract negotiation. You can read his statement here, in which the trade request is made. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones responded to Parsons through the media, saying, “I would say to our fans, don’t lose any sleep over this.”

It’s not official, but reports are circulating that the WNBA is on the way to Boston. Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca has made a bid for the Connecticut Sun, with plans to move the team. A story to monitor…

A deal that is all but official, however, is the long-rumored sale of NFL Network and it’s associated media properties– including RedZone– to ESPN. In exchange for the valuable media assets, the league will receive partial equity in ESPN. Expect an even closer partnership than what we already see between the two giants moving forward.

Finally, a story that may not mean as much to you but is massive news both around the globe and to me personally. Son Heung-Min, the captain of Tottenham Hotspur, is set to leave the team in London this summer and join LAFC. One of the most decorated South Korean soccer players in the country’s history and a beloved figure at Tottenham, the 33-year-old will be sorely missed on weekends in the Premier League. I have no doubt he will quickly become one of the a leading goalscorers in MLS.

One day after being dominated by Tarik Skubal, Christopher Sanchez, the Philly defense, and Kyle Schwarber won a really fun 2-0 game last night against the Tigers. And so, I’ll leave you this morning with a quote from one of the only in-game baseball interviews I’ve enjoyed. Have a wonderful Monday:
