Baseball and fireworks
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, July 3rd.
MLB
It’s the Fourth of July, so you know we have to talk about baseball!
Matt Shaw hit a walk-off sac fly in the 10th and the Chicago Cubs earned a sweep of the Cleveland Guardians with a 1-0 victory. Chicago is playing great ball right now… right as the rival Cardinals come to town on a three-game losing streak.
Have a day James Wood! The Nationals young star went 5-5 and hit his 23rd home run of the year. He’s going to be a popular selection to win the Home Run Derby in a few weeks. Washington beat Detroit 11-7.
I don’t know how Bobby Witt Jr. made it home safely on this slide… it’s baffling. But the electric move was enough to secure a 3-2 win for the Royals over the Mariners.
Bobby outrageous! 🤯

The Giants beat the Diamondbacks 7-2 thanks to an incredible performance by starter Robbie Ray. He struck out seven and went the full nine innings for San Francisco.
There’s trouble brewing in New York City… for the first time in franchise history, the Yankees were swept in a four-game series in Toronto. Yesterday’s 8-5 Blue Jays win moved the team into sole possession of first place in the AL East, too. George Springer hit two home runs and Nathan Lukes grinded out an RBI after this amazing 14-pitch at-bat!
On May 25, the Toronto Blue Jays lost 13-0, had a 25-27 record and were in fourth place in the American League East.
On July 3, the Blue Jays finished a four-game sweep of the Yankees to move to 49-38 and took over first place in the AL East.
Five weeks can change everything.

TENNIS
Yet another top seed was taken down in the early rounds at Wimbledon. The top-ranked Brit Jack Draper fell to former Grand Slam champion but current number 83 in the world Marin Cillic in four sets. The way things are shaking out, someone we’ve never heard of is going to make the quarterfinals…
The big story of the day, however, concerns American Ben Shelton. Up 5-4 in the third set with a chance to serve for the match, Shelton’s match was suspended due to darkness and the Wimbledon curfew rules. The big-serving Shelton was understandably frustrated, as he will have to go back out on court today and warm up for potentially four points. It’s timeless, but the pageantry of the All England Club can become quite tiresome, too.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Portuguese and Liverpool footballer Diego Jota, who was killed along with his brother yesterday in an automobile accident in Spain. A terrible tragedy that has left all of us at a loss for words. You can read more here about Jota and how he’s being honored around the world.
Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz is the latest pro athlete to fall under a gambling investigation. This is an odd one, because reports are indicating two individual pitches are what alerted regulators to the unusual activity. Gambling and throwing games in sports is bad enough, but now we’re potentially seeing players throw away individual pitches? I’m afraid we’ve already fallen down the slippery slope.
Carolina made another big offseason move, signing one of the top available forwards on the market in Nikolaj Ehlers. It’s a great fit for the Hurricanes, as Ehlers brings some much-needed offensive flair to their system.
